Nuno Bettencourt reveals last thing Ozzy Osbourne said to him

All right. Well, you’re obviously here for such a special moment tonight. You’re honoring Azie. What does that mean to you? Listen, that means everything, especially my 15-year-old self as a guitar player coming up and listening to rock and metal, he was a godfather to us. You know, he started it in the early ‘7s and that’s how rock became heavier and heavier and uh for him what he did with Black Sabbath and then be out of there and have a whole other career as Ozie Osborne and the solo artist and then be a reality star after that. This guy’s affected culture in a way and touched everybody in so many different ways. So, it means everything. Especially having been part of it in Birmingham just a month ago now maybe and going up and performing and actually talking to him and saying goodbye. We didn’t know. I mean, we knew it, but we didn’t know it, you know, and uh so that was really special. I was going to ask you about that. You were there for Azy’s final show. Such a special moment. First of all, how did you get the call to be a part of that? What did that mean to you? Well, Sharon, you know, when I was 15 and his guitar player passed in a in a bad plane accident in like 1982 or 81, I believed when I was 14 that I was going to replace him and there was an ad to send a cassette in. Yeah. 1900 a cassette. So, I did. I put a cassette together at 15. Send it in. This is my gig. I’m going to get it. Of course, I didn’t. Nobody ever called. Cut to 12 years later. I’m opening Ferraris Smith with Extreme in London and my booking company coming with Sharon just called. Aussie wants you and wants you to be in the band. And uh this is like 1995 96. And I said no. And I said no. And the last thing Aussie said, is that like your biggest regret ever? Probably. I was in a band that we were just up and coming with Extreme and we had hits up. But the last words we said to each other when we took the big group photo and I was at his feet. I grabbed his hand saying, “Thank you for everything and thank you Aussie for what you mean to me.” And he pulls me in by the hand. He goes, “You were the only guitar player who said no to me.” Were Were those the last words he said to you? The last word. But he laughed. He goes he goes, “I love and he laughs. He goes, he goes, “Thank you for being here to to honor him.” And I was like, “Thank you.” I said, “Thank you for everything.” How special to be a part of that show. What What was the energy like for those of us that weren’t there? Just describe the feeling and just everybody in the room like what did it feel like to take the stage with him? Yeah. You know what really really really blew my mind is that when you get Guns and Roses and Metallica, the biggest bands in the world to come together to do something. I’ve been part of those things before, you know, tributes and it’s always like everybody’s egos, they’re rock stars. All of a sudden, every member of every band is in the same room. It was like heavy metal summer camp. We were all a bunch of kids again because like Aussie was like our dad or our godfather like you guys behave. But everybody put eagles at the door. It was a hugfest. There was so much love and you could feel it on that stage. There was no nobody was complaining and everybody was just helping each other out and supporting each other. And that I haven’t seen that I’ve been doing this for 40 years. I’ve never seen that on a tour anywhere else where everybody was just like a big community and big rock family. That was what and that’s what Aussie does to everybody for us, you know. That’s so beautiful that he had such a beautiful sendoff. Um, and you’re taking the stage tonight with other rock legends, right, from Aerosmith, Joe Perry, and Steven Tyler. What have rehearsals been like to be with their company and take the stage with them and what can you tease? Listen, not only has to be playing guitar on it, but to be music director for the whole thing. It was like I had to, you know, pull pull these guys in together like we said for Azie. Let’s do this for Aussie. We know there’s Aeros Smith is iconic. We know Young Bloodood is an incredible upand cominging artist that’s probably going to take over the world it seems like cuz he’s so incredible. But you know what? We got to do this for him. So, let’s put our egos down and we pull together and this beautiful like harmonies and vocals going to happen and we’re going to like blow the roof off the place in the beginning, but I think there’s going to be some tears in the end. I’m so excited. And now Sharon and Kelly and Jack, do you know are they coming tonight? We’re going to be expecting We’re not sure, but I think there’ll be some surprises up on the screen at least, you know. Okay, good. Well, we’re excited. I’m so looking forward to seeing the tribute and it was such a pleasure to talk to you. Thank you so much.
