    Selena Gomez is opening up about criticisms on her weight and coping mechanisms in a new interview. The singer credits much of her ability to handle criticism about her body to dialectical behavior therapy, otherwise known as DBT, which the Cleveland Clinic characterizes as a form of talk therapy focused on helping people accept the reality of their lives and their behaviors as well as helping them learn to change. She describes it as peeling away layers and connecting the dots. Speaking on her thought process, the singer tells Allore September 9th, “I got stung by a person saying I was fat. Why is that emotion coming up?” “It was DBT,” she says, “that gave her the tools to unpack why.” Adding, “Oh, now I understand.” That’s stemming from that one time when I was going through some medical stuff and I had gained weight. Some therapists even provide little cards you can pull out when you feel a certain type of emotion with questions to help guide you through understanding it. You just definitely have to be willing to do the work. And that part can be tricky. [Music]
