‘Downton Abbey’ cast remembers the magic of working with late Dame Maggie Smith
What’s your favorite memories of Maggie Smith? Oh, there’s so many. Oh, I I I I liked it when she was just sort of sitting comfortably off camera sort of chatting and telling stories. And she loved the girls, didn’t she? She had a lovely relationship with the girls. And um she yeah it was just it was just lovely to see somebody like her relaxed and um and and just chatting away and telling stories and she love she loved other actors as well. She loved the business and she loved acting. She loved work but it’s often times it’s in those collective groupings and and moments off camera as Kevin said that got very very vivid memories of her with Shirley Mlan. um in uh season four I guess um when Shirley came to play for a bit and they were just nashing about the old days and uh meeting at the Oscars and she said I didn’t meet you at the Oscars did I and uh she said yeah I was probably face down in a cake and um if it was backstage I wasn’t winning there I must have been presenting um and telling stories about Jean Kelly and uh Lawrence Olivier and you know I just sat there taking the crumbs from their table it’s fascinating uh what do you think the secret source es to the shot. As Julian says, I mean, if I knew that, I’d bottle it and sell it. I think underlying it all is is um a generosity of spirit, which which shines through in Julian’s writing, as he always says, you know, he writes from a default position that people try to be good. They may do bad things, but they try to be good and try to get on in society. And I think that’s what we’re all doing on in our in our, you know, three school years and 10.
“Downtown Abbey” stars are missing their co-star, Dame Maggie Smith, nearly a year after she passed away.
Kevin Doyle, Allen Leech and Hugh Bonneville reflected on their time working with the late legend while promoting their new film, “Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale,” in an interview with Page Six earlier this week.
Doyle — who portrays Joseph Molesley, a butler-turned-screenwriter — remembered how Smith loved to sit off camera and chit-chat with other cast members on set.
