As the Duke of Sussex, Prince Harry, works to mend relationships with his family in hopes of making more frequent visits to the UK, his wife, Meghan, reportedly feels “threatened” by the prospect of re-entering Royal life.

Just last week, 41-year-old Harry completed a successful four-day solo trip to his home country, reconnecting with his father, King Charles, for the first time in 19 months.

When asked about his father’s health at an Invictus Games reception shortly after his arrival, Harry – whose significant meeting at Clarence House lasted just 54 minutes – replied, “Yes, he’s great, thank you.” The news comes as Prince Harry had an emotional 11-word message after he visited war-torn Ukraine.

Harry’s trip and, notably, his positive interaction with King Charles, sparked hope that a reunion with the rest of his estranged family could be on the horizon.

However, following former BBC Royal correspondent Jennie Bond’s comment that Meghan, 44, “would feel somewhat threatened by her husband being drawn back into the royal circle,” a leading psychologist has warned that such a move could trigger the mother-of-two’s past trauma, reports the Express US.

Meghan has openly discussed her challenging experiences in the UK.

During her bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, she revealed feeling completely alone after marrying into the Royal family and “didn’t want to be alive any more”, but was refused mental health support. Court documents filed by Meghan’s lawyers during the legal battle over her private letter to father Thomas Markle revealed she also felt “unprotected by the institution” and “prohibited from defending herself” while pregnant with Prince Archie, now six.

Psychologist Clare Deacon explains that Meghan’s traumatic experiences won’t simply “just disappear” despite relocating to America.

“It isn’t erased by distance, and even years later, stepping back into a space that once felt emotionally unsafe can activate past fears, doubts, and protective behaviours,” she explains.

“If reconciliation [with the royal family] led to a return or increased UK presence, Meghan could understandably feel conflicted – torn between duty, identity and the peace she’s built since.”

The expert added that Meghan might worry about “of losing herself again” if she temporarily returns to her former life after “finding her voice and reclaiming her wellbeing”.

Just last week, a source close to the prince revealed he hasn’t abandoned his fight to bring his family back to Britain, telling The Times, “He wants them to know their family here. He really would like to come back to the UK much more.”

The report also suggested that Harry is planning a “under-the-radar” strategy regarding the security matter, and “the government should expect private ‘lobbying’ from the prince” to persist. Nevertheless, bringing Archie and Lilibet, four, into the equation is likely to cause even more anxiety for Meghan.

Psychologist Clare, founder of therapy and coaching platform Happya, believes Meghan’s motherly instincts will compel her to shield Archie and Lilibet from any pain she has experienced herself, making a journey to Britain incredibly difficult even for a short visit.

If a UK trip becomes necessary, Clare notes, Meghan must “explore what feels unsafe, separating past experience from present reality”, while setting firm boundaries for herself and her kids.

Harry, 41, has stated that he “would love” a reunion with his family. But after his unsuccessful High Court challenge concerning his security provisions in the UK, he announced he “can’t see a world in which I would bring my wife and children back to the UK”.

In July, rumors of a possible reconciliation between the Sussexes and the Royal family grew stronger after a meeting took place between senior advisors from the King’s office and representatives from Harry and Meghan’s communications team.

Meredith Maines from the Sussexes’ California-based PR team and her UK colleague, Liam Maguire, were spotted on the balcony of a private members’ club in London with Tobyn Andreae, the King’s communication secretary, in what was described as “secret peace talks”. Last month, Meghan Markle expressed her love for the freedom she enjoys living in Montecito, California, describing parts of her life as a working Royal in the UK as “inauthentic”.

The potential reconciliation between the Sussexes and the Royal family may depend not only on Prince Harry’s longing for his homeland, but also on Meghan’s determination to keep the freedom she worked so hard to regain.
