Robert Redford, Hollywood Icon, Dead At 89
Hollywood icon Robert Redford has died at the age of 89. The Oscar-winning director and actor passed away on September 16th at his home at Sundance, surrounded by those he loved in the place that he loved, according to a statement to Access Hollywood from his publicist Cindy Burgerer, who added that he will be missed greatly. Redford, known for his starring roles in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President’s Men, was also influential in American independent film as he was one of the founders of the Sundance Film Festival. Redford won his first Oscar for best director in 1980 for his drama Ordinary People. In 2002, he received an honorary Academy Award. His influence spanned more than just numerous accolades in the arts. He was also a prominent environmental and political activist and philanthropist. In 2016, then President Barack Obama awarded Redford the Presidential Medal of Freedom. We admire Bob not just for his remarkable acting, but for having figured out what to do next. He created a platform for independent filmmakers with the Sundance Institute. He has supported our national parks and our national resources as one of the foremost conservationists of our generation. He’s given his unmatched charisma to unforgettable characters like Roy Hobbs, Nathan Muer, and of course, the Sundance Kid, entertaining us for more than half a century. As an actor, director, producer, and as an advocate, he has not stopped. And apparently drives so fast that he had breakfast in Napa and dinner in Salt Lake. At 80 years young, Robert Redford has no plans to slow down. In his personal life, Redford had been married twice. First to Lola Van Wagan. The couple had four children. Their first baby, Scott, died of sudden infant death syndrome at only two months old. In 2009, he married longtime girlfriend Sibil Sigers. [Music]
