Brett James, Grammy Award Winner, Dead After Plane Crash | E! News

    The country music world is mourning the loss of one of their own. Grammy award-winning artist and songwriter Brett James died in a plane crash in North Carolina September 18th. He was just 57 years old. The National Songwriters Hall of Fame announced his death, confirming he was killed in the aircraft accident. Details about the crash remain limited as the FAA continues its investigation. Brett was known for writing some of country music’s biggest hits, including Carrie Underwood’s Jesus Take the Wheel, for which he won a Grammy Award and Kenny Chesny’s When the Sun Goes Down. He wrote 27 number one hits on country radio and was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2020. Dirks Bentley, who worked with the songwriter on his 2013 smash hit I Hold On, mourned James’ death on Instagram, posting a photo of the two and writing in part, quote, I brought a couple of roughly sketched verse ideas of I Hold on to Brett after my dad died and he just did his thing. The chorus is all him. When I sing that song live, I’m always thinking of my dad, but I also think about the day we wrote it. Dirks also writes, quote, “Our friendship and that song changed my life.” Sarah Evans, who worked with James on the hit song Cheetan, writes on Instagram alongside photos working together. Quote, I am absolutely devastated at the loss of one of the best writers I’ve ever written with and recorded several of his songs. Brett James, I’m praying for his loved ones. What a tragic and sad day he will be so missed.
