**Context:** Mediapart is renowned for uncovering political and financial misconduct, and her husband, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, was investigated by them concerning allegations of illegal campaign financing.
Today, a Paris court sentenced Nicolas Sarkozy to 5 years in prison for criminal conspiracy related to alleged Libyan financing of his 2007 presidential campaign. The court found that Sarkozy and his associates conspired to obtain funds from Gaddafi’s regime in exchange for diplomatic favors.
**France has very strict rules on campaign financing** to keep elections fair. Each presidential candidate must stay under a legally fixed spending cap (around €22–23 million in 2012), declare every expense, and avoid any foreign funding. If a candidate respects the rules, the State reimburses a large part of the campaign costs. But if the cap is exceeded, there’s no reimbursement and possible criminal charges.
In Sarkozy’s 2012 re-election campaign, his team massively overspent the legal limit. To cover it up, they issued false invoices, making part of the campaign look like party expenses instead of campaign expenses. In reality, Sarkozy’s campaign had spent almost double the legal maximum.

Five years is cruel and inhuman punishment — he’ll appeal but the risk that he actually has to serve time is high, at this stage. So Carla will have quite some free time on her hands. Which means, I fear, the world will be inflicted at least another Carla Bruni album. Maybe more. Which is cruel and inhuman.
