Bette Midler Reflects on 30 Years of Her Iconic Hulaween Ball | E! News

B. Midler recently joined our own Bruce Bosy for an exclusive oneon-one. In part two of our EN sitdown, the legend dishes on her special Halloween plans that help give back. So, one of the things and one of the great things that has to become an iconic party in New York City is Hulu. Yes. So, Hulu is the sort of big night to raise money to help pay for all this. Can you talk to me about how was it named Hulu? Well, when we first started, we did a certain amount of work and I funded all of it for a couple of years. And then I realized, oh, this is expensive proposition. And someone said to me, “Well, you should have a gala.” I said, “What’s a gala?” And they told me what a gala was. So, I said, “Oh, we’ll have one.” And I was talking to Mick Jones, who was a sleeve singer and foreigner. And I said, “I’m having a Halloween party and I want it to be Hawaiian.” And he said, “Oh, you should call it Hulu.” So, I said, “Oh, okay.” And I called it that. Great. And and that and and it stuck. It stuck. So, it’s been 30 years of Halloween and it’s a Halloween party. I have dressed up for 30 years. I’ve had some wing-ding costumes. We’ve had some fantastic entertainers. We had Elton John. We had Stevie Wonder. We had Cheryl Crowe, John Bonjovi, Cindy Laugher. I mean, some big stars. And we sell tickets and we have a blast. Yeah. I mean, the big stars are in the room. They’re on the stage. This year we have a great theme called New York. New York. A hell of a town. A hell of a town. Your daughter was quite instrumental in that idea, which was a brilliant idea. What’s she going to be? To tell you the truth, I’m actually not sure, but I did get the notice that I’d better start thinking about it. And I’m looking forward to it. Part of the problem is that I’m a little bit older than I was 30 years ago. So, I don’t want to wear a corset. I would rather just wear a burlap bag, to tell you the truth, because it’s a long night and I just want to be comfortable. You could do that famous scene, the I love Lucy when they were in Paris and they had the burlap potato bags. Oh my god. Oh my god. So this year Andy Cohen is one of our honores. Yes. He already told me what he’s going to be. Are you going to tell me? Are you going to keep it a secret? Um I’m going to tell you. Whisper in my ear. Oh, that’s a good idea. Okay. So, what was your Bam was your favorite costume of my own? Uh, I have to say I we were ahead of our time when we had the makeover ball in the late 90s. There was a kind of a trend towards makeovers. There was a makeover show here and a makeover show there and everybody was getting makeovers. Okay. So, we had the makeover ball. We auctioned off visits to a plastic surgeon which nobody which nobody would bid on because I was too embarrassed. Today it would be one of the highest bid. Oh my god. Are you kidding me? Forget about it. Please. So we had like Botox this and it was just the beginning of all that stuff and the hairdresser and with somebody you could go and get dressed by. So we did all that and I came as a nurse and I was doing the injections. So and this is like 1999 or something like that. The event was over and I got un you know I put my clothes away. I put took my costume off and my costume was stolen at No, I’m not kidding. And not just my costume, a whole bunch of costumes. I have no idea. Some drag queen wanted to be a nurse. Who knows? Anyway, it’s crazy. It was crazy. [Music]
