The Gist

Prince William appeared on the October 3 episode of Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveler, hosted by Eugene Levy.

In the episode, the Prince of Wales opened up about his parenting style when it comes to Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis, who he shares with wife Kate Middleton.

The future king revealed that none of his kids have a cell phone, a rule that he and the Princess of Wales are “very strict about.”

In one of his most candid and wide-ranging interviews ever, Prince William shared with host Eugene Levy on Apple TV+’s The Reluctant Traveler a parenting rule that he and wife Kate Middleton are “strict” about with their kids Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis.

On the October 3 episode of the show, the Prince of Wales shared that, in order to create a “healthy, happy, and stable” home, George, 12, Charlotte, 10, and Louis, 7, don’t have cell phones.

“None of our children have any phones, which we’re very strict about,” he told Levy, adding that the family of five sit down to the dinner table together most every night, as, in his words, “to sit and chat is really important.”

“Everything is about the future and about if you don’t start the children off now with a happy, healthy, stable home, I feel you’re setting them up for a bit of a hard time and a fall,” the future king added.

The Prince and Princess of Wales do school pickups and dropoffs “most days,” and William said he attempts to “balance work and family life” around the kids’ school schedules. In the interview—filmed this past February—William said that “worry and stress around family” was much more likely to “overwhelm” him than his role as heir to the throne.

Of that role, William said he isn’t afraid of making changes to the monarchy, telling Levy that “Tradition has a huge part of all this. But there’s also points where you look at tradition and go, ‘Is that still fit for purpose today? Is that still the right thing to do? Are we still doing and having the most impact we could be having?’”

Elsewhere in the episode, William said that the year between 2023 to 2024 was “the hardest year that I’ve ever had”: “Trying to sort of balance protecting the children, Catherine—my father [King Charles] needs a bit of protection, but he’s, you know, he’s old enough to do that himself, as well,” the Prince of Wales said. “But it’s important my family feel protected and have the space to process a lot of the stuff that’s gone on last year, and that was tricky trying to do that and keep doing the job. But, you know, we all have challenges that come our way, and it’s important to keep going.”
