Today, Grand Duke Henri abdicates the Luxembourg throne in favor of his eldest son, the new Grand Duke Guillaume.

The abdication follows Luxembourg royal tradition, as the past three generations of monarchs have all abdicated and Grand Duke Guillaume becomes just the tenth monarch in Luxembourg’s history since the country became a grand duchy in 1815. He has royalty on both sides of his family; his father descends from the grand ducal family of Luxembourg and his mother, Princess Charlotte, was the only daughter of Belgium’s King Leopold III (b. 1901, d. 1983) and Sweden’s Princess Astrid (b. 1905, d. 1935).
