Caleb Hearon is bored of “safe” celebs: “People are still trying to cling to this celeb culture of the 90s where its like you just never say anything. You stay out of it all. You pick your charities very wisely—animals or cancer. Things that no one would be offended by. Don’t talk about Palestine.”

    1. He is right and he should say it. Where are the vocal and activist celebrities? You have some who are still doing it regardless such as Javier Bardem, Liam Cunningham or Angelina Jolie, but the rest are just fucking spineless.

agree with this 100%. whenever someone brings this up, i see so many people say “you shouldn’t give celebrities so much power”, when most if not all of us are asking them to have basic human morals and empathy, not change laws like politicians.

i think that we’ve seen time and time again that with situations like jimmy kimmel, while the principle of it is something that everyone should advocate and support – to celebrities it was a “oh i could be affected now” and we saw an uproar that we hadn’t seen with palestine for the past three years, they’ll always choose themselves first.

I mean…I’ve also felt this narrowing of culture writ large. We’re in late stage capitalism folks! Our money doesn’t stretch as far, we’re ultimately lining the pockets of billionaires, the planet is dying and our celebrities are so fucking boring!!

He’s right and it’s because he is smart but some of his peers are very DUMB.

    5. So I was watching this, and wondering to myself “why does our culture today seem to be so immune to horrors such as Gaza?” And ultimately I find myself disagreeing with him- maybe not the way you think, though. YES YES YES to speaking out about genocide. But the reason people AREN’T and the reason people are indifferent and cold to what’s happening in Palestine is rooted in the fact that actually too many people won’t shut the fuck up about opinions that don’t matter at all, or that are factually incorrect. That’s how we got Trump to begin with, just lies (not only from him, but largely from celebrities and influencers) and talking shit and meaningless opinions.

Less people need to be talking. Not more. The ratio of educated, informed people to idiots is not good enough for more opinions being shared. I’m writing this in like a fever dream so forgive me if this doesn’t make sense.

    6. Personally I don’t think celebrities should have any obligation to speak out on particular topics. But we shouldn’t be idolizing them or holding them in esteem if they do stay neutral.

    7. It’s all bs unless they’re talking about tax reform or class struggle. It’s so fucking annoying that wearing a cute slogan on your shirt is considered taking a stand for liberal values now’n days.

    8. Today’s the first I heard of this guy (his face is vaguely familiar) but I like what he’s saying. As much as I think celebs opinions aren’t important, the majority of people do.
