Ridley Scott says modern Hollywood is ‘drowning in mediocrity’ and he’s taken to watching his own movies: “They’re really good! And also, they don’t age. I watched Black Hawk [Down] the other night and I thought ‘how the hell did I do that?'”

Ridley Scott is like the opposite of an auteur. He’s the cinematic equivalent of a pure workman. His filmography doesn’t have any sort of consistency in terms of quality or style. But he’s made amazing films; Alien is one of my favorites of all time. Give him the right script, the right cast, and the right crew, and he can do it better than anyone. But he’s not one of these guys whose name on something is like an automatic stamp of quality.

That’s wild. I watched Napoleon the other night and I thought, “Why the hell did he do that?”

    3. Ridley Scott in his “I can say or do whatever I want” arc is my favorite sure he’s hit or miss but I love seeing he’s what he’s gonna do next. I actually thought Gladiator II was fun as well.

Scott’s recent outings are so far in the shade of his earlier works he’d need a head-torch and gps to find them

The total combined budget of Ridley’s films since 2014 is $1.08 billion, if we estimate half again as marketing $541.5m that’s a total of $1.62B roughly. The total box office gross of those films was $1.98B of which the studio gets half so $990m. That would see a net loss to studios of about $630m.

Ridley would do a greater service to the film industry if he didn’t suck up hundreds of millions of dollars to direct absolute dreck and instead we saw that money shared amongst more upcoming talent.

Ridley can say whatever he wants. He’s a (sassy) living legend who’s given me favorite films in every decade he’s worked.
