Why Taylor Swift Fans Think “Actually Romantic” Is About Charli XCX | E! News

Swifties are a buzz about a possible diss track on Taylor’s new album. The song, Actually Romantic, off the Grammy winner’s 12th album, The Life of a Showgirl, may not actually be about a romance, per se. Rather, it’s a response to an unnamed person who, according to the lyrics, has spent a lot of time talking about Taylor. In the song, Taylor sings, “High-fived my ex and then you said you’re glad he ghosted me. wrote me a song saying it makes you sick to see my face. Some people might be offended, but it’s actually sweet. While Taylor rarely reveals who a song is written about, many fans on social media believe it was inspired by Charlie XCX, who opened for Taylor on her reputation tour and is friends with Taylor’s ex, Mattie Healey, and his fiance Gabriette Bectal. When Charlie, who’s married to Mattie’s the 1975 bandmate, George Daniel, released Brat in June 2024, there was speculation that her song Sympathy is a Knife through Shaded Taylor. However, two months later, Taylor seemed to put the rumors to rest by sharing her praise for Charlie, telling New York Magazine in an article published August 26, quote, “I’ve been blown away by Charlie’s melodic sensibility since I first heard Stay Away in 2011. Her writing is surreal and inventive always. She just takes a song to places you wouldn’t expect it to go, and she’s been doing it consistently for over a decade. I love to see hard work like that pay off. E-News has reached out to reps for comment on the speculation and has not yet heard back. [Music]

    1. Taylor Swift fatigue is real. And it sounds like the song "Canceled" is her defending Blake Lively so I guess they're both @$$holes

    2. A fascinating escalation. Given the history of professional patronage and the problematic nature of the individual (Healy) being defended by Charli and publicly, Charli's position presents a baffling calculus. She’s okay to write a song about being insecure while also doing the only thing that would cause insecurity in Taylor’s life (siding with a abusive ex) not very girls girl especially if your vulnerable enough to be “insecure”. To side with a controversial male figure over a female benefactor subverts expectations of solidarity. If Swift perceived betrayal, her history confirms she doesn't betray; she retaliates. Is the issue here that Taylor is a straight shooter and more popular? Okay, why start something your fans can’t handle lol. Love this song!
