Nicole Kidman appeared to hint at her breakup from Keith Urban ahead of the news going public.
The Oscar winner, who split from Urban in early summer, sat down with Vogue in late August, weeks before PEOPLE confirmed that she and her husband had gone their separate ways.
When asked during the interview how she felt in her 50s, Kidman, 58, told Vogue, “How many times do you have to be taught that you think you know where your life is going and then it isn’t going in that direction?”
While she didn’t expand on her relationship status, elsewhere in the interview, the actress recalled spending time with loved ones in July and August as she filmed Practical Magic 2 in London.
“Going to Hyde Park and concerts, Glastonbury and Salisbury — so much summer fun — Evita, seeing theater, walking Hampstead Heath, swimming there,” Kidman told Vogue. “Went to Portugal, went to Greece, had my nieces and nephews around, lots of family: my sister, my best friend since I was 4, and her three children. A very tight group.”

News broke Sept. 29, that Kidman and the country musician, 57, had separated early in the summer after 19 years of marriage. The actress formally filed for divorce in Nashville one day later, citing irreconcilable difference and listing the date of separation as the time of filing.
After marrying in 2006, the couple welcomed two daughters, Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret, who are now 17 and 14. Kidman asked to be primary residential parent in the custody agreement as part of the divorce filing.
A source close to the family told PEOPLE last week that the Babygirl star has “been stressed because she knew the separation would eventually become public and she was dreading it.”
“But,” the insider added, “she’s surprisingly level-headed and calm. Now that it’s out she’s just focused on what’s ahead and her girls.”

Another source told PEOPLE amid news of Kidman and Urban’s split that the actress “has been fighting to save the marriage,” and “didn’t want” the breakup.
“The entire Kidman family has come together to support one another,” that insider added, noting that her sister Antonia has been a key supporter.
A source close to the family told PEOPLE on Tuesday, Oct. 7, that Kidman has “had a good attitude about everything and life goes on.”
“She was in Texas this weekend and is happy to be back at work,” the insider added.
Reps for Kidman and Urban have not responded to PEOPLE’s requests for comment.
