What Diane Keaton Shared About Her Health Before Death
Here’s what actress Diane Katon had shared publicly about her health before her death at the age of 79. According to a family rep, the Something’s Got to Give star did not publicly disclose any major health issues in her final months, but she had previously been open about her struggle with cancer and bulimia throughout her life. Her signature hats weren’t just a fashion statement. The star took sun protection seriously after her skin cancer diagnosis at the age of 21, telling the LA Times in 2015, “It’s a family history. I remember my auntie Martha had skin cancer so bad they removed her nose. My father had basil skin cancer and my brother had it. It’s tricky with this skin cancer. That’s why you’ve got to put sunblock on.” Still after battling basil cell carcinoma in her 20s, she was diagnosed with squamus cell cancer decades later, which took two surgeries to remove per the times. Aside from her cancer battle, Katon had been open about another health challenge, bulimia. She said she became self-conscious about her body after being asked to lose 10 lbs for a part on Broadway when she was younger, telling Dr. Oz in 2014. All I did was feed my hunger, so I am an addict. Katon eventually got into recovery for her eating disorder. She got candid about her struggles in a 2011 book. Then again, per the New York Daily News, writing, I think I’m a sister to all the rest of the women and I’m sure men as well who have had some kind of eating disorder, and I’m part of the team.
