Woody Allen Pays Tribute to Ex Diane Keaton After Her Death | E! News

Woody Allen is paying tribute to Diane Katon. Following news of the actress’s death on October 11th, the director penned an emotional message to Diane, who he dated from 1969 to 1972. Writing in an essay by the Free Press published October 12th, “It’s grammatically incorrect to say most unique, but all rules of grammar and I guess anything else are suspended when talking about dying Katon.” Unlike anyone the planet has experienced or is unlikely to ever see again, her face and laugh illuminated any space she entered. The Annie Hall director goes on to recall meeting Diane ahead of his 1969 Broadway show played against Sam. I first laid eyes on her lanky beauty at an audition and thought if Huckleberry Finn was a gorgeous young woman, he’d be Katon. And despite their close interaction, Woody, who starred opposite Diane in the play in the 1972 film adaptation, admits that it took over a week for them to speak. As he put it, quote, “With two shy people, things can get pretty dull. But at last, the two got dinner after rehearsal, and he fell head over heels. She was so charming, so beautiful, so magical that I questioned my sanity. I thought, could I be in love so quickly?” And as the relationship deepened, Diane, who starred in Nate of Woody’s 50 films, had become his sounding board. He shares, “As time went on, I made movies for an audience of one, Diane Katon. I never read a single review of my work and cared only what Katon had to say about it.” When he concludes his message with, “A few days ago, the world was a place that included Diane Katon. Now it’s a world that does not. Hence, it’s a dreary world. Still there are her movies and her great laugh still echoes in my head. [Music]
