Claudia Winkleman’s favourite member of the Royal Family helped inspire her persona on the Traitors. The murder-mystery programme has become a sensation with audiences since it debuted three years ago.
It has even resulted in a celebrity version featuring the likes of comedian Alan Carr, Olympian Tom Daley, and television presenter Jonathan Ross. Claudia has also become a viewer favourite on the programme as the tartan-clad presenter.
And she reveals Princess Anne was part of the inspiration behind her appearance. The Princess Royal herself is considered a success with the British public, consistently ranked amongst the most beloved royals.
Speaking to Hello! Claudia explained: “We went quite Miss Trunchbull and Morticia [Addams], with a nod to Princess Anne, who’s our favourite.”
Claudia’s wardrobe on The Traitors was styled by Sinead McKeefry. The star added: “Sinead went: ‘Are we going for a bit of taffeta?’ and I’m going to be honest, I went overboard with that.”

Claudia’s outfit selections on the programme have been the envy of audiences. Combining high-profile designer brands with independent labels, her style has been described as “gothic glam meets power dressing”.
Sinead told Grazia magazine that she regularly has had people requesting a “Claudia in The Traitors look”. She added: “I think because [Claudia and I] enjoyed being back in the process, we had our inspirations and knew what our look wanted to be… Ronnie Corbett meets Princess Anne meets Madonna (in the Guy Ritchie days! )”

Her signature cape coat has also emerged as a must-have wardrobe piece, providing an ideal method for layering outfits.
It’s not only Claudia’s fashion choices that have proved popular on The Traitors. Audiences have been captivated by her dramatic presenting style, which earned her the BAFTA TV Award for Best Entertainment Performance in 2023.
Claudia recently revealed she felt “scared” when the programme secured a celebrity version. Speaking to the BBC, she said: “I was scared. Only because I’m in love with this show and I wanted to keep it small. Once a year or maybe once every two years felt like enough. My bosses thank goodness ignored everything I said.”
With the programme featuring numerous well-known personalities, Claudia revealed there was one participant who left her “welling up”. She added: “I could barely breathe when I saw them all in the Highlands. I’m such a fan of every single one of them.
“The whole team were just in awe, it was hard not to scream ‘you’re here!” When I talked to Stephen Fry I almost welled up, I told him “this was my dream”. We’re incredibly lucky to have the cast that we have. Each one of them is tremendous.”
