‘Drag Race Philippines: Slaysian Royale’ Ep. 9 recap | Werk Room Weekly

Who the is Reena girl? Hi, I’m Jason. I’m Brian. And welcome back to Workroom Room Weekly. Let’s talk about episode 9 because we’re so close. This is the penultimate episode before the finale. We’ve got a top four. The Fantastic Four, as Mama Pow said, and as fantastic they are. Like they are so strong. This was following Kiana’s elimination, which I’m now in the acceptance stage of the eight stages of grief. So like cuz you were angry last week. I was upset. But like seeing these four girls, especially in this maxi challenge, I was like, they’re so good. Like, you know what? We were talking about Kiana’s branding and we’re like, what is her brand? You said lipsync assassin. I think she’s got to go villain mode at this point. We need to see a return villain era Kiana. Yes, I would love that. But I’m super excited for these girls. I mean, they said, you know, it was between her and Venas, and the girls agreed that Venus deserved to stay. She had two R badges. She has so much to show. So, like I I do agree that I I’m happy with this for going into it. Oh yeah, the the track records are really strong for Venus and Brigading. Yeah. No, no. Yeah. So, we do have everyone has two R badges except for Suki with one R badge. So, I mean, they’re all strong. Suki did say like she feels validated and she feels like, you know, with this win, she feels like she has a rightful spot in the top four, which she does. She’s so talented. She’s really holding it down for us on this. She’s the mother of the season. The mother. Um, so it’s really exciting. So, we go into the next day. Mama Pow comes into the workroom. She’s kind of in like biker chic. She’s in like leather pants, a leather vest. Call Alexander Sarsgard. I was like, “Okay, but the shoes glam glam.” Everyone said, “Yes, shoes. Come on, shoes.” So, Mama Pow comes in and she introduces this week’s mini challenge. And it’s kind of like a play on RuPaul’s like Tic Tac lunch that he does with like the final four, except this time they actually get food on, you know, driver. They eat or what? I have never seen this much chowing down on television. Yeah. I love it how they did four different interviews and Mama Pow and Jervy Writson were literally eating for every single one. Every single one. They didn’t save any shrimps for the girls. No, no, no, no. So, the girls got to connect with them in what they called a boodle fight. It was a Slian fiesta boodle fight. Um, and they just got to have like a, you know, kiki with the the girls and then they had like a stripped down black and white photo shoot session afterwards. Herbert Britz was just glowing in his grave. You know, this was like black and white. This was editorial and there’s some really beautiful shots. I mean, I personally loved Arizona’s with the smoke. I know we’re not trying to promote vaping, blah blah blah. But that was so beautiful. It is. And it’s so clearly like a part of her brand for this season at least. So, like I thought it was so good. You know, she didn’t win. Uh it ended up being Vinas who she gave a cute little shot. M P was like, I feel like we really see who you are through this shot. But I was like, I don’t know if that’s the one I would have picked. It sort of was giving a little like Ariana Grande bunny ears. Maybe there was something more like playful fetishy about it. I must have missed it because to me Ariana or sorry, Arizona was the shot. Yeah, I think so too. I think we were going for like raw emotion and this was giving kind of like photo booths like you know we we’re just doing a little photo strip. So I don’t know. But Vinas as the winner, she did get an advantage going into our maxi challenge, which this week is the girls have to star in a music video. So that involves writing their own verses, learning choreography, and the girls have 10 minutes of shooting time for their segment of the song. And the mini challenge winner, Vinyas, gets to take two minutes away from a girl, and she picks Arizona. This is the Slian, you know, just the petty game. We’re back. You know, 2 minutes is a long time though out of 10. Yeah, at least we’ve elevated from one minute to two minutes. Now they’re going to be like, “Actually, you get one minute to film your segment.” So, yeah, I guess we’ll we’ll see how this plays out later in the And it’s original song. Yeah, it is. And it’s an original song by our brand new Drag Race girl group, Raina. So, this group, if people didn’t know, they actually kind of debuted earlier this season, and it’s made up of fan favorite Drag Race Philippines alums. So, we have all three winners from all three seasons. Precious Paul, Precious, Paul, and Nicole, Captivating Cat Cat, and Maxi and Marina Summers from season 1, who’s like a fan favorite icon. Um, she’s the manager of the group. Oh, no, no, no, no. It was um uh Cat Cat is the manager. Cat Cat’s the manager. Marina, they all had different roles, but Cat Cat was the manager of the group, which I would take that role. I love that. Absolutely. Um, so the girls like have a song that the the top four are going to add verses to. Um, I thought this was fun. I thought this was really cool. I, again, I love the integration of past Drag Race girls into this season. Like, they clearly value their winners, which I love. Absolutely. And girl groups are having a huge moment right now. You know, obviously there’s Blackpink, you know, there’s cat eye. Cat eye. Cat’s eye. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. So, I didn’t want to slur the S. Catsai. Yes. And, you know, I think Raina, which means uh queen in Spanish, you know, is going to I don’t know. They they they’re just as good. It feels like they’re they’re taking their spot. I really liked this. So, the girls go into rehearsals for this. They have to go into like singing rehearsals. I had flashbacks to the girl group episode 2 episode. I was missing something wrong. This episode needed some. Could you imagine she came back as the vocal coach? Like they were like, “And I mean, honestly, they could have used it, but Maxi had some great notes.” Yeah. I mean, I was like these Yeah. The these verses were tough because you really have the syncupation, you know, for the way, you know, a-hop is going with girl groups, like it’s almost like rapping and singing at the same time. So, and the girls had like different styles as we’ll see, you know, some went the rapping route, some went the singing route, someone just like screaming. I don’t know. Um, but the girls, you know, I know who you’re talking about. Oh, yeah. Yeah. Um, and so we see in like kind of the rehearsals Bri and Arizona are really eating it up. Like they’re so strong. Um, Suki having a little bit of difficulty. She like cramps up during like the rehearsal. Venus is like forgetting her words. Yeah, Suki’s crashing out at this point. I’m getting really nervous for her because we’ve got a top four and I’m like, are they going to kick Suki off? Like, no, she’s our girl. Yeah, we can’t do that. We can’t do that. Um, but Okay, so then we go into the main stage for this week’s episode. Uh, Mama Pow comes out. She’s in this like Garden of Eden like floral dress. Poison Ivy, Batman and Robin, baby. So good. Yes. With her red wings. Thurman. Oh, she’s so delicious. Um, and this week we had guest judges Marina Summers from Jagger Philippines season 1 and our season 16 winner, Nyia Win. Oh my gosh, this was huge. I remember when Nyia won, I was at $3 bill in Brooklyn and the place erupted. I mean, she is like the the people’s princess. Oh, she’s so good and I’m so glad they they got her involved in this. But can I say what was going on with this headpiece? Oh, the fishes. Yeah. I literally thought they were airplanes until the end of the episode and I paused and I was like they’re fish. Yeah. I thought she was getting like like attacked by a swarm of planes. I was like this is weird. Hated the fascinator. Love Nyia. I know. I saw the promo look before the season and I liked it in pictures and then when I saw it in episode I was like I don’t think this is translating. Give us bananas. Yeah. Just give us yellow please. Stick to what we know and love. Um so we get to watch the actual episode or the music video and what were your thoughts? So, Suki went first. She was like the first one in the the featuring. I thought she crushed it. I thought she was so good. And that outfit was so like gaga, you know, leather bar. It was sexy. I loved it. Yeah, she looked like a pop star. I loved her outfit the most out of all four. Like the wet hair moment. I mean, she was giving like a sexy side. It was We haven’t seen a sexy side from, you know, Suki. And I was getting flashbacks to like Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson with the like, you know, Bear Midriff and the leather and gold. So cool. No, I thought it was great. So, I I really did like Suki. And then we had Arizona. Arizona, our butch queen of the week, the girl, she pulled out the bandana. You see, she still had her vape. She still had her vape. She vaped halfway through her verse. I mean, we got to get a 12step program for this girl. She cannot be without the vape. But what’ you think? Arizona also crushed it, you know, and she’s got a great voice. Like, I did not It didn’t occur to me until now that Arizona could also sing because she’s such a good comedy queen. Yeah. secret weapon. So fun. And then we had Brig. This was like a winner’s performance. She’s a star. It was so good. The way she like connected with the camera, the eye contact, the level of confidence. Like I have not seen this from Brag so far. And it was so great cuz earlier in the episode, she talks about how like she really feels like this has been like her redemption season. She was such a legend going into her original Philippines season. and then she felt like she kind of like had this tough spot between the airing of her original season and this one. So now for her to come back and to really hone in on what she does so well and as we’ve seen throughout this whole season and then for her to give this performance was just so triumphant. So happy so cute. I know you can’t stop looking at her. The face the face is like hypnotizing. Like I just was so locked in on her. Absolutely loved that. And then we had Vinas. Um, I liked this. I mean, she she was given runs and she was given vocal range. Um, the confidence was there. It was there. It was there. I would say I I was pretty impressed by her singing. I don’t know. I thought it was fun. Yeah. It was a little bit for me like Jessica Simpson where it’s like you don’t have to sing every note. Demi Lovado sings every note. Vinia sings every note. Yeah, it’s like just to show off. Yeah, I know. It worked for me. It was fine. Um, so yeah, that was our kind of actual maxi challenge. And then category for the runway this week was awardwinning body. Ai, I love this category. I was a little disappointed by the looks. I was too. I like, did I misinterpret this? I was expecting to see body. All these girls were covered up. Like, yeah, I think they leaned into the award show or maybe that was what they were told ahead of time and then they added an extra pun. You never know. Like I feel like with the tech challenge sometimes there’s a little bit of a curveball. Yeah. And I think like they were all giving award show and glam glam and I think the real challenge was how to make the statueette also fun. True. And for that reason I think Venus killed it. But let’s go through each one. I mean I Yeah. So we we had all three uh we had all four. I mean I really didn’t like any of the three. like I just did it like like you said was a beautiful look and a kind of a nod to her teal and gold fleck, you know, gold fleck look from uh past episodes and I um yeah, I mean she was pretty. Yeah, I think she was the strongest out of the three I didn’t like. Like you said, I think I did like Venuses the best just cuz like I got the story I I got the connection to her. The giant lips so fun. It was giving uh Wendy Williams on the mass singer. No one opens the door for a native New Yorker. Like she totally ripped that off Wendy. She bought that off Wendy’s Poshmark. It was so good. And I love that Venus’s story, you know, about being bullied for having like big lips as a kid and having a big mouth and now she’s made it her whole thing and she’s like, “This is the mouth that that wins lipsyncs. This is the mouth that, you know, delivers funny jokes and, you know, I I think that’s cool. Yeah, it puts food on the table.” And I really love that. Also, like her trophy actually with like the mouth. Was that a flashlight? Like what was that? And she joked, “It’s not just a flashlight. It’s a used flashlight.” But she gave it a little kiss. It was so wholesome little was crazy. It was a flashlight, but with a a woman’s face. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Um there are other flesh lights that we could not have put on World of Wonder. No, no, no. The Wow app would not allow certain flesh. There’s a line even for WoW presents Plus. Um so yeah, I think like I said, I think Venus was probably my fave out of those runs. Um, I thought it was also fun like before the tops and bottoms were announced, the girls got to like reflect on their journey. They got to talk about each of the past eliminated girls, give their flowers to each of them, and something I think was a fan favorite like Miss Ceniality based on their reviews. But I think like something even though she we know she has like a big mouth, she also has like a big heart. She cares so much for the whole international queen. What about Yeah, absolutely. I thought that was sweet to hear. I thought it was really sweet. They they awarded Sam the the curse the cursing queen. No, the spirit award which is even shadier. I was like so mad. Stop chanting. Stop chanting now. I’m going to just start saying that to people on the street. Stop chanting. Like I don’t think chanting. What’s going on? Uh but I thought that was really sweet. So then we come back to the main stage. We find out that our winner was brigading. She now has three R badges. I think it was deserved. You know, she gave such a powerful performance in the the music video. I mean, she looked like Cinderella. Might as well give her the crown. I know. Give it to her. So, she has three. And then our other top of the week was Arizona, which meant that our bottom two were Suki and Vinas. So sad. I know. I’m scared. I always hate to see someone go home. And then they’re given a ballad. And this might be our first ballad, a true, you know, torch song of the season. Yeah. Power by Moriceet. I had never heard it, but I loved it. I I was like Morset. Atlantis Morset. and they were like, “No, not quite. Not quite. Close. No cigar.” Um, I loved it. I I think Vinas was so captivating in this. My eyes were glued to her the entire entire song. She’s got the mouth. I know. And for a ballad, she was It felt like she was really singing it. And I know that’s like the whole, you know, illusion, the whole fantasy, but I really was like drawn in. And then she even had a stunt. She’s a stunt queen. Yeah, she still, you know, did the reveal with the lips and, you know, underneath was a um velvet pink velour prom dress. I’m fine with it. I’m fine with it. Yeah, it’s okay. Um I thought it was great. Like I even felt like listening to like the lyrics like how like I said, Venus was talking about like her insecurities that we mentioned and then for her to be singing about like how she has power and stuff. It was just really cool. I really liked it. I’m a woman. I’m this is my power, etc., etc. It was just it was the kind of performance that an entire bar would erupt into applause for. It was so great. Uh, so we find out that Vinas won this lipsync. So, she has secured her spot in the top three and that means that Suki unfortunately did not go home. She didn’t go home. We have a top four. You’re pulling a Ryan Serest on us. Yes. Mama Pal said we need to see more Suki doll. So, we have a top four going into our grand finale. Justice. This feels right. I’m so excited. Like I said, these four are just so powerful. Like seeing them in the music video, seeing their runways, just like I was like, I love this top four. I’m so excited. We got There’s another week of them. No weak links in this bunch, you know. No. No. Absolutely not. We have one more really exciting announcement. That’s right.
