Grammy award-winning singer D’Angelo is dead at 51. D’Angelo, who became an award-winning singer and artist under the stage name, died on October 14th following a battle with cancer. His loved ones confirmed he was 51 years old. His family shares in a statement obtained by NBC News. The shining star of our family has dimmed his lights for us in this life. We are saddened that he can only leave dear memories with his family, but we are eternally grateful for the legacy of extraordinary moving music he leaves behind. They add, “We ask that you respect our privacy during this difficult time, but invite you all to join us in mourning his passing while also celebrating the gift of song that he has left for the world.” The passing of D’Angelo, whose real name was Michael Eugene Archer, comes 5 months after he had to cancel a performance at Philadelphia’s Roots Picnic Festival in May. At the time, in a statement shared by the festival on his behalf, D’Angelo shares the cancellation was due to an unforeseen medical delay regarding surgery he had earlier in the year. D’Angelo began his career at age 17 when he was signed by Midnight Songs LLC after Jocelyn Cooper heard a demo he wrapped and produced in 1991. He won his first of what would become four Grammys in 2001 for best R&B album with Voodoo, an award he’d win again in 2016 for Black Messiah. [Music]

    1. Met him when we were 19 years old, he still went under Dโ€™Angelo Archer and I was working at WBLS. He was so cool, laid back, down to earth and talented but humble. When Voodoo dropped in 2000 I was so amazed and congratulated him. He was still humble and cool. Really saddened by his passing and the immense loss to his and Angieโ€™s son๐Ÿ˜ข That poor guy has lost both his parents in less than a year๐Ÿ’” My prayers go out to his spirit and his family๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ
