It’s been over 14 years since Prince William married Kate Middleton in Westminster Abbey in London on April 29, 2011. But royal fans are only just learning about an awkward mishap the royal made in front of everyone on his big day.

The royal couple, who now have three children together, first met at the University of St Andrews in 2001, before they officially started dating two years later. Their engagement, which took place on October 20, 2010, was announced on November 16, 2010. The lead-up to the wedding gained the attention of people all over the world, who were quick to compare the festivities to that of William’s parents, Charles and Diana, back in 1981.

After Prince William and Kate said their ‘I do’s in Westminster Abbey, they were soon greeted by millions of cheering fans who gathered on the streets of London for the occasion. They then made their way to Buckingham Palace, where the late-Queen hosted a lunchtime reception.

When it was later time for the newlyweds to leave, Prince William and Kate got into a vintage Aston Martin – which had been a gift to King Charles by his mother on his 21st birthday.

While the couple looked happy as ever, many fans might not have realised the drama that was going on for the lovebirds in the car.

Taking to Instagram, a video of the moment was shared onto ‘quickpastfacts’ page, where William and Kate were seen waving to people from the car as they made their way to Clarence House, where he lived at the time.

But the text on the video revealed: “When Prince William drove Catherine from Buckingham Palace, with the hand break still on. Even fairytales have their funny moments.”

They went on to write in the caption of the video: “There are few moments more endearing than the day after their wedding, when Prince William, in his excitement, drove Catherine away from Buckingham Palace in his father’s Aston Martin-with an L-plate on the car and the handbrake still on yes, he later confessed he hadn’t released it in his joy!”

Arthur Edwards, the Sun’s royal photographer later revealed what had happened on the BBC’s Desert Island Discs, as he said: “I was talking to (then) Prince Charles about that. I said: ‘Did you mind him borrowing your car?’ Because he loves that car. It was a birthday present from his mother on his 21st birthday.”

However, then-Prince Charles reassured Edwards that William had asked for permission before using it for his wedding day. But Edwards then went on to point out there seemed to have been a problem with the old sports car on the day in question.

King Charles then revealed to the photographer: “Yes. Because he didn’t take the handbrake off.”

Fans were left in stitches when learning this, as some took to the caption of the video to share their thoughts, as some also pointed out another detail about the decorated car.

“Why has it got L Plates was he a learner,” one person pointed out. To this, another viewer replied: “They’re learners in the wedding as in new ‘learners’ in marriage. It’s a British humour for us.”

Another viewer jokingly revealed: “For a moment I thought she was driving, then I remember they’re in the UK.”
