    1. The fact that anyone was able to copyright “spud” in the context of food the first place is insanity. It’s such a basic descriptor of a baked potato, I can’t believe any judge wouldn’t see the issues this would cause

Edit: the plot chickens, according to the IPO they hold the trademark for “Spud Bros” (the spud father’s tm is in examination) but someone else holds the tm for “The Spud Brothers” surely that means it’s basically unactionable for them to sue others?

    2. As Faleena Hopkins and the Fine Brothers can attest to, this likely won’t end well for whoever the Spudbros are.

This jacket potato gentrification is insane anyway. People queuing up for half an hour to pay £8 for potato covered in beans and cheese??? Don’t get me wrong I love a good jacket p but why it’s being treated like a gourmet experience is beyond me

What in the potato gratin did I just read? Potatoes have been called spuds in Australia “since Adam was a boy” (as my dad would have said) a carry-over from the British and Irish settlemen). How could you even trademark that if it’s in the been a part of the colloquial lexicon forever?

Hopefully this goes about as well as when David Chang tried to trademark “chili crunch/crisp” a few years ago and was sending cease and desist to small businesses for using a common condiment in SEA cooking.

    6. This is the perfect opportunity for John Oliver to purchase British restaurant chain (or at least the IP as im not sure they have any restaurants open anymore) Spud U Like which started in the late 60s or early 70s and absolutely trash these newcomers to the spud world in the court before then making the spud name accessible to all. John absolutely looks like someone who spent his youth sitting in a spud u like sad and alone eating a potato while everyone else was at Maccy Ds, so im sure he’d be up for it…

We have a local donut chain called Spudnuts that’s been around since forever should they sue spudbros?

Didn’t Kylie Jenner try to trademark “Kylie” and Kylie Minogue was like “nah girl”

First of all, it’s called Kumpir. Second fuck these nerds. It’s potato plus toppings. Get over yourselves.

    10. Reminds of me a situation in London a few years ago where a semi corporate Mexican spot called Taqueria sent a cease and desist and threatened further legal action to one of the few actually good Mexican spots, a place called Taqueria Sonora. Like mf that’s like trying to say you’ve trademarked ‘diner’ or ‘cafe’. Fortunately the failed hard. People were egging them and other displays of displeasure to the point they hired security 😂
