‘Boston’ Rob Mariano unpacks his Dylan Efron bromance and more with ‘Virtual Reali-Tea’

Bro, listen. The the show’s not over till it’s over. Even after the dance, you look at those judges. Make sure you smile. I want to see some fist pumps. Like, the show’s still going virtual reality. Boston Rob Danny and I are so excited to have you in studio cuz we were just hanging out with you dressed like a massive Duncan cup and we we took some guesses. We were wrong, but we were so happy to discover that it was you underneath the cup and not Ben Affleck. kind of like the uh trader reveal. Yeah, exactly. It’s bringing you back. Are you a Duncan guy? I ever since I was a kid, you know, I grew up in Boston and um the name my mom would go to Duncan taking us to hockey practice. So, I was kind of like grandfathered in. Oh, I love that. And also kind of iconic, did you think that your love of Duncan would bring you to working with Sahayek? I mean, and it was amazing. She She’s I got a funny story. So, we show up on set to shoot this, you know, spot and there’s two trailers and I accidentally went into her trailer and there’s like three dogs, like five makeup people, hair stylists, everyone. And I just hear her, I see her down the end, she looks at me, she’s like, “Honey, I think you’re in the wrong spot.” Like, “All right, cool. Thanks, Elma.” You’re like, “Well, I guess I’m getting glam today.” Yeah. Went to my trailer. It was me, my agent. We hung out. So this is for the Duncan swirl. It’s a new Kalúa collab. It is. It is. Yeah. It’s amazing. So uh I like iced coffee. So even the new caramel swirl. You can have it just over ice. It’s delicious. And I love too that um you guys had some fun uh with Watch What Happens Live. Are you um a big like Bravo? Like you’ve been going to Watch What Happens Live? That’s like a moment. Yeah. So I’m learning that this is the second time I’ve been over there with Andy and he’s amazing. He hosted the Traers finale and I was never really in the Bravo world, but that’s the cool thing about Traders is like it introduced like the competitive reality people to the Bravo universe and also it really brought out the competitive nature of the Bravo celebrities. Yes. Yes. Cuz I mean, while they maybe didn’t make it Well, Dolores was a winner. Dolores won. Dolores is a winner. Dolores is a winner. Dinda was like out early this time, but I hear she’s going for redemption. She’s coming back. She’s got to make it past at least one episode. And Fedra absolutely crushed it on her. Amazing. And your friend Sierra didn’t do too bad. Cool. Yeah. So Summerhouse, right? Yes. Now I mean they are um having fun in the competitive like competition reality TV space. Does talking to them ever make you be like would you ever want to do like a more lifestyle reality TV? The Real House husband. Yes. Yeah. You know what I mean? cuz I know you did back in the day you had a reality show with your wife. Like would you ever want to bring that back or something like that? You know, I’m just like really content with my history with the competitive space. Dylan’s been like trying to get me to dance. Oh, you got to do Dancing with the Stars. I’m not a dancer. But it’s competitive though. It’s competitive. You’re lying. But no, I’m not a terrible dancer. You have no rhythm. Not 1 ounce. Like none. I But do you know what? the right partner, she can teach you her ways. So, we had dinner uh the other night in LA with Dylan’s partner, Daniela. Oh, she’s amazing. And her husband Pasha and Danielle official and she’s like, “Don’t worry, I’ll get you.” I was like, I wait, you would do. So, even though you’re maybe a little bit scared to dance, are you up for the challenge? I mean, see, that’s the thing about me is I’m so competitive by nature. If I do it, I’ll want to win. I think Amir Ball’s in your future. Yes. Do you think air ball is in Dylan’s future? What do we think of his performances so far? I love the way he’s doing. He’s on top now. Like uh we talked strategy the other day. Like a few on it’s a tough season, right? There’s a lot of good dancers. So, we’re going to have to figure out a way. But right now that he’s at the top, everybody’s going to be gunning for him. I told them just stay in the top half. And when you were talking to him, how is he feeling? Like is he feeling overwhelmed, feeling confident? Like what’s the vibe? I think he’s like really embracing it, you know, like like Dylan’s a great dude and he just, you know, I think he’s he’s taking it and learning, you know, as he goes and he’s doing great. Dedication dance. Oh, I know. So sweet. Oh my god. I was a puddle. It was I was in the rehearsal with him and I was watching it and I was like, “This would be impossible for me.” Like just watching it. That’s why like as much as I would like to say, “Yeah, I would love to do that.” I just don’t know if I’d be great at it. Who would you want to because you do have competition so of course I got to take it there. Who from your season of traitors would you want to compete against you on Dancing with the Stars. Oh, I mean Dylan’s already gone. Sierra is great, you know? That’s my girl. She would be amazing. She really would be. But I mean I’m friends like Cricelle’s already done it. Gabby’s already done it. Like a lot of them have been in that. So I think you’re up next for sure. I think so. You know what? There was a part of me Rob where I almost thought that Dylan was going to do his dedication night dance. I could dedicate it to you. That would actually have been amazing. You guys actually talked to Yeah. What do you appreciate most about this friendship with Dylan though? Because it literally is the bromance of the century. I mean, it just kind of like we just vibe based on, you know, like like we both have a shared sense of adventure and competition. Uh he’s just a good guy, you know, and I like that. Like inside the house or the castle or whatever it is, when you’re cutthroat trying to murder people and kill, you’re playing a game. But as soon as that’s over, we uh just connected on a regular level. And what are the way like when he does need the hype up for the uh Dancing with the Stars, what’s like the motivation that you have? I cut him down. Yeah. Yeah. That that’s that’s how you know when you really cut him down cuz he always seems to be in such great spirits. How do you break him? I say, “Listen, bro. Listen, the the show’s not over till it’s over. Even after the dance, you look at those judges. Make sure you smile. I want to see some fist pumps.” Like the show’s still going. That’s right. I love that the show’s not over till it’s over. And then after the first one, I was like, we got to talk about the song choices cuz that milkshake, it didn’t bring you to the yard. No, it was not coming to the yard. What would you What song would you bust a move to when you Come on now. Cuz I know I know you’ve had nights out. Don’t even What song gets you on the dance floor? No, I don’t. Like that’s the thing. Like I’m not going on the dance floor. Yeah. Okay, we’ll allow for now. Is there other competition shows or just reality shows in general that now because like you were saying trade opens up a whole new ball game. Is there anything you’re like, “Oh, I would be fun on that.” So like as a competitor on these shows, I feel like it’s been 25 years. Like I’ve kind of have a reputation now where they might let me stay a little while, but they’re going to be coming for me. So I feel like my days as like competition reality person might be over. But I like to like move into other aspects and like what I mean Dylan and I actually worked on a different project that’s going to be coming out soon. Oh, very cool. Is it like docuer? It’s kind of like a little bit docuer like YouTube format. It’s us, you know, being competitive and you guys are going to like fun. That’s his literal dream come true. You are his idol. I mean, that’s so crazy. He manifested that for himself. I’m kind of curious. kind of did. Yeah. No, right. He’s a genius. Now that you and Dylan are so close, have have we met Zach yet? Have you met Zack? I have not met Zack. You haven’t? Oh my god. Wow. Okay, so once he introduces you to Zach, you know it’s real. That’s when you know it’s real. That’s when it’s happening. Zach would love you. I’m sure. I’ve never met him, but I just feel like he would. I think like really I like would like to move into like the hosting production, you know? That’s kind of feels like the next evolution. Yeah, like I have a unique experience that I’ve competed so many times, but I can see it from the production side, too. Would you want to be like a host in on a show you’ve already done or a completely new game? Cuz I cuz that makes sense. It would bring experience in that realm. You know what I’m saying? Well, I mean like Jeff is not going anywhere anytime and he’s the greatest. So, I feel like my best shot is to kind of like create my own, you know, space. If you created your own competition show, do you know how many people would sign up? Oh my god. Yeah, that would be insane. I mean, that would be crazy. I’ve never thought of you as a villain. I know some people think of you as a villain. Would you ever do House of Villains? No, I don’t think so. Cuz you know what’s so funny? People call you a villain, but like your smile, you’re just like I’m just like you. Yeah. What do you think of the villain label all these years later? Is it something you wear proudly? Do you do you rebuke it? How do you feel about it? I understand like why people would perceive that, but like really to watch compelling TV, to make compelling TV, you have to have an antagonist, right? Otherwise, what are we watching? It’s the Brady Bunch. And it was a great show, The Brady Bunch. We watch it for years. But I mean, like, when you’re out there, you want somebody to kind of root against a little bit and you want that underdog to get there. So, I embrace that role. I like it. And from because you like you said you’ve been doing reality TV for 25 years. Yeah. What do you feel has changed the most like maybe even like production wise or like type of people that sign upwise from like when you first started to now? I think the biggest thing is these shows need to evolve and they have evolved not only from like a strategic point of view, but like like shows are always like physical, they’re strategic and like you have to like like from a casting point of view like the game has to change cuz at some point they figure it out. Even with Traders, it’s only been four seasons now that they’ve shot and the game’s kind of solved a little bit, right? Like if you think about it, there’s 23 people in the castle. All you need is 10 people to form an alliance and say, “Listen, no matter what happens, we’re not getting rid of each other because even if we find the traders, what’s going to happen? They’re just going to add more traders.” Right? Okay. So once you understand the meta of the game, then you realize production has to figure out ways to to twist it. And Survivor has done a great job of that over the years, introducing different idols, different twists, different everything. Always keeping the contestants on their toes. I’m wonder have you did you take a look at all the people coming on this new season of the Traers? I’ve I’ve looked through it. Yeah. Like do you think did anybody stand out as like, oh, they’re going to go far? I mean, so I you can’t really predict, you know. Why do I feel Donna Kelsey is going to be a secret like sniper getting her way through that? What do you think of Donna Kelsey getting into this? I mean, I love it as a casting choice. I think, you know, it’s going to bring a lot of eyeballs for sure. Uh, if I were out there with her, I would protect her at all costs. Who’s going to try to vote off Donna Kelsey on the off chance maybe you get to meet her daughter? That’s exactly it. Exactly. I would just be like, Donna, how are we? Yeah, she’s going to win it. Emily, does she need the money? No, I think but I mean with that, you know, comes people being like seeing that as threatening because of that too, right? So any reason that’s a reason to vote someone up, murder someone, whatever it is, is also a reason to keep them. Your first season of Survivor all those years ago, you were talking about how, you know, you’re proud to be the the antagonist. Before you started reality TV, did you did you think of yourself as an antagonistic person? Was that in your nature or did you find that part of yourself when you got in front of cameras? Listen, I was a construction worker from Boston. Okay. So, like each and every day you had to be sharp and you had to be quick cuz nobody was giving you any passes out there. So when I went out there that first season, I really think I understood the strategy of the game even better than the producers did at that point. And I know that sounds like bold, but like there was a guy that was on that first season. He was like the Captain America, like you know, like the guy. And I was like, let’s get rid of him early. And that was like completely against conventional theory at the time because everyone’s like you got to keep the strong to keep the tribe strong to keep going. But in the back of my mind I was like man if the strong guy is here how am I going to lead if I have to answer to him? So I was like this is like you know a democracy as much as it is. So let’s get the votes and let’s get rid of him. Once I did then I was able to take control. Unfortunately, that season like there was a twist and I got put on a different tribe and I was out early. But I mean, I don’t think I was set out to be the antagonist. I just knew that I was going to do whatever it took within the context of the rules to try to win. And if I could find any loophole, I’ll find it and use it to my advantage. And that’s why you really are the reality TV winner. You know what I mean? That’s why you are still I can’t wait to watch you on reality TV 25 years from now. No, I’ll tell you the reason I’m the reality TV winner is cuz I met my wife on the show and I have four amazing daughters to this day. I love that. That really That’s how you know you’re fairy. You’re such an adult. Oh my god. And I love it.
