Meryl Streep is the GOAT in the category and has this down to an art, imo. She can devastate you while tears threaten to spill from her eyes. 😭

Daniel Kaluuya in Get Out is a good example of trying not to cry.
Granted, I was thinking about this because I watched an acting coach on YouTube use this as an example of trying not to cry, compared to Tobey Maguire in Spider-Man who is trying to cry.
Ultimately, you generally want the actor to cry in a “try not to cry” way because that’s just more realistic. It sells how overwhelming the feeling is, like a dam bursting.
Agreed it’s just more realistic. For the same reason I think it’s more believable watching someone play “drunk but trying to pretend they aren’t” than watching someone just play drunk

I couldn’t find a good gif of it but Kate winslet does this a couple times in the holiday and it’s SO emotional. The opening scene when she finds out jasper is engaged is the one that specifically comes to mind
