David Burtka shares Neil Patrick Harris’ go to cocktail, their twins’ hobbies, & more from new book
the fall’s so great in in in New York. Uh and outside of New York, I would say if you can get get to somewhere where you can see the the leaves changing, you know, like go up to the cloysters or um go down to a park or central park. Um also, you know, when we’re we have a place out east and it’s always great to go apple picking or the pumpkin patch or, you know, I know there’s, you know, we would go on our roof and carve pumpkins for for Halloween. You know, it’s a busy time of year for us because not only are the kids going back to school, but their birthday is in the beginning of October and then you’re into, you know, you’re into Thanksgiving and Christmas and you’re making all those plans and it’s like once you get on the train in the fall, it doesn’t stop. So, you know, we’re trying to um, you know, we try to have family dinners. You know, Neil’s doing a play on Broadway right now, so it’s been it’s been um, our Sundays are pretty sacred. you know, at night when he’s done with his show, we usually always have dinner together. Um, it’s harder during the week when he has, you know, a a show at 7:00 and the kids are getting, you know, Harper’s getting home from volleyball and getting coming home from rehearsal and we were all sort of, you know, when they were younger, it was easier, but we really tried to find time for the family to all spend together. You know, 9 years ago, there wasn’t many options. There was like soda, water, and juice. And they’d sort of look at you and go, “Uh, we have juice.” Like, I’m like, “I don’t drink.” And they’re like, it would be like they look down on you. But it’s a whole different world now. I think the Gen Z generation is seeing that, you know, it really is not the best thing to put in your body. They want to wake up and they want to feel fresh. And, you know, I I think a lot of bars and clubs are are even closing down now because they because this generation isn’t drinking. And where do they make all their money is the alcohol upsell. So there are a lot of places that are that are opening that are juice bars and dance clubs and you know it’s an afternoon instead of like a nighttime. People go there to people go there just to dance and have fun and be healthy. So I really I embrace it. Like I think it’s great.
