Good Morning, Chaos! The 8 Wildest Moments of GMA

Good Morning America. Good Morning America. Good Morning America. 50 years of mornings and never a dull one. From jaw-dropping drama to live TV chaos, Good Morning America has seen it all. Remember when Chris Brown stormed off the set? Oh yeah, that happened. Mariah Care’s wardrobe decided to go solo on air. Diva. Oh, now the back of my dress just popped. The companies do say. And who could forget Will Reeve? Business on top, party on the bottom. Would ask you what you’re wearing, Will, but I won’t do that. Tom Hanks dropped an Fbomb before his coffee. I want people to buy me. Susan Luchi delivered a soap opera slap. Heard roundtime square cuz you stink. And Robin Roberts. Oh, she took hot ones to a new level. I’m talking to you, mama. Proposals. We marry you. Weddings. I do. Tears. Laughter. It’s 50 years of live TV at its wildest. So, buckle up cuz we’re counting down the eight wildest moments of Good Morning America. Okay, baby. First up, Mariah Care’s wardrobe malfunction. Good morning. On May 24th, 2013, Americans woke up to Mariah Carey serenating the nation with we belong together. [Music] Police. A massive crowd filled Central Park to watch the diva’s big performance. But the real surprise came later during Larara Spencer’s revealing interview. Thank you for getting up early. I don’t mean I wake up. I mean I go to sleep. It’s kind of the same thing for me. That’s right. Well, you’re now the back of my dress just popped. It popped. It popped. I love you, Donatella. But it popped, darling. Midcon conversation, Mariah’s designer gown decided it had a mind of its own. The back of her dress popped open and live television history was made. I just wanted to change the ensemble and I you know it’s it’s just that this pop. Is it going to fall? Cuz Yeah. Okay. Both of them are out. We don’t like them both. This is TV. What should we call this? The Central Park saga. I I dare say this is a TV moment. As Laura helped keep the gown in place, the show went on. Wait a minute. Just hold on. I’m going to do this. Bend over. Get the zip. I know we have to start singing somebody or hey, let’s just hold them up the whole time. In the end, America got more than just a free concert. We got a front row seat to one of GMA’s most iconic live moments. Yay, New York. We love you. At number seven, the soap opera slap heard round time square. All hail the queen, Susan Luchi, the queen of soap opera. It was May 2nd, 2023, and daytime royalty had just entered the Good Morning America studio. The woman who made All My Children Appointment TV, Susan Luchi, the legendary Erica Kaine from All My Children was there to talk about heart health. May is stroke awareness month and I’m so proud to be have the opportunity to work with American Stroke Association. But before the morning was over, she gave America a lesson in soap opera combat. You are known for the slap. Yeah. So, okay. Can you teach me how to do the slap? When Michael Strahan asked her to teach him the art of the classic onscreen slap, Susan didn’t hesitate. She stood up, took her stance, and began an acting master class. You have to sell it, and I have to sell it. And the camera has to be at a certain angle, which is so that you don’t see me make contact cuz I’m not going to. Okay. Oh, thank goodness. Yeah. Yeah. Don’t Don’t be afraid. It’s only going to look scary. Why would you ever do this to me and my family? You stink, girl. [Applause] Straham played the part a little too well. Michael went flying backwards, milking the drama like a seasoned soap opera star. You’re so bad. Everybody, the studio erupted. Fans online called it the most GMA moment ever. My life is now made. I retire, everybody. Within hours, the clip of Susan Luchi slaps Michael Strahan went viral, earning millions of views and a whole lot of laughs. The best part, it was all in good fun and all for a good cause. Luchcci’s visit was to raise awareness for heart health, proving she could teach a life-saving lesson and land a flawless fake slap in the same morning. You stink, girl. Give her another Emmy. Next up at number six, Tom Hanks drops the fbomb on live TV. Tom Hanks here for Good Morning America. He’s America’s most beloved everyman. The Oscar winner, the nice guy, the one who never swears on camera, right? Don’t mess with me, Liz Varna. I’m not I love the movie. But on October 18th, 2012, Good Morning America viewers discovered that even Tom Hanks can have a slip of the tongue. Tom was on the show to promote his new film, Cloud Atlas. During a light-hearted interview, host Elizabeth Vargas asked him to show off one of his characters unusual accents. Tom politely warned her. Mostly it’s swear words. So that’s that’s that’s a little bit. And seconds later, he proves himself right. I want people to buy me. In full character, America’s dad blurted out the fbomb. I want people to buy me. Live on morning television. We are so sorry. Uh, good morning, America. Man, oh man. Vargas froze. Hanks froze. And the control room probably froze, too. Then came one of the most endearing apologies in TV history. I would apologize to the kids in America that are watching this right now. The clip instantly went viral. Viewers couldn’t believe that Forest Gump himself had just dropped an F-bomb before 9:00 a.m. But if you’re going to swear on live TV, you might as well do it charmingly. I’m sorry I slipped into a brand of acting. Tom Hanks proving once again that even when things go off script, he’s still America’s dad. Let me say next time on the show, there will be a 7-second delay. Moving on to number five, Will Reeve, Business on Top, Shorts Below. It was the early days of the pandemic when studios were empty, living rooms were newsrooms, and America was learning what Zoom appropriate really meant. CVS and UPS say initially the final leg of prescriptions journeys will be done by ground carriers. ABC News correspondent Will Reev, son of Superman Christopher Reev, went live on Good Morning America from his apartment reporting on pharmacy drones delivering medicine to seniors. People won’t be getting their medication dropped out of the sky into their mailbox just yet. He looks sharp. blazer, crisp shirt, everything camera ready, except the camera revealed a little more than planned. The companies do say they will scale up the program if it is successful, guys. Very cool. We love it, Will. Thank you. Viewers quickly noticed no pants, just boxers or shorts framed perfectly by an unlucky wide-angle lens. Social media lit up. Reeve laughed it off, tweeting, “They’re shorts, I promise.” with the emoji of his hand over his face. When work from home goes wrong. On a personal note, I just want to say I try to take life seriously, but not myself. So, I’ve had a good laugh at this. It became the ultimate pandemic era blooper. Reeve joked about it, proving on Good Morning America, even when you lose your pants, you never lose your sense of humor. Would ask you what you’re wearing, Will, but I won’t do that. You guys, we’ll be right back. At number four, Paul and Linda McCartney live from England. Hello, this is Paul McCartney from somewhere in England. Good morning, America and happy Thanksgiving. It was Thanksgiving morning 1980 and Good Morning America had something extraordinary planned. While most Americans were carving turkeys, David Hartman and the GMA team were carving out history. A live satellite interview with Paul and Linda McCartney broadcasting all the way from their farmhouse in Sussex, England. Ah, there’s McCartney. Do you see there? He is again. Good morning. He looks ready. He looks ready for us and awake. Are you ready? The interview was part of the promotion for Paul’s new concert film, Rock Show. But what America got that morning was far more personal. A glimpse into the quiet life of two music icons. He was known as the cute beetle. I mean, that’s what they called McCartney. The cute because he the cute the cute beetle. Yes, that’s what they called you. Joan, do you think he’s cute? I do. Yes. Well, there’s somebody here thinks you’re cute and she’s rather attractive herself. This was groundbreaking. A live transatlantic conversation with the ex beetle beamed into millions of homes at breakfast time. What was your first impression of Paul? Was he your favorite? Did you find him, as we said earlier, kind of favorite? No, he wasn’t my favorite. He wasn’t? Who was? No, he soon filmed became my favorite, mind you. Did you like John better? And in true GMA fashion, David Hartman didn’t shy away from the big questions. John, he seems resentful of you. Do you know why? Or I don’t quite know why he thinks like that. I mean, what do you do about that? I I really just shut up these days about I think it’s the best policy, David. The clip would become one of Paul’s last televised remarks about his friend and bandmate, John Lennon, before tragedy struck just 11 days later. For GMA, it was more than an interview. It was proof that live morning television could connect worlds. Music royalty in England, a host in New York, and an audience at home. All sharing breakfast, laughter, and a little bit of history. Take care. See you. Byebye. Happy day. Moving on to number three with Chris Brown’s Morning Meltdown. Chris Brown riding high. Brand new CD out, Fame. that’s out today. It was a Tuesday morning in March 2011. Chris Brown had just arrived at Good Morning America to perform live and promote his new album Fame Fame. He was calm, smiling, and ready to talk about his comeback. But host Robin Roberts had a different question on everyone’s mind. The 2009 assault involving Rihanna. The restraining order against you that Rihanna had uh had issued has been relaxed. Have you all seen each other, been around each other? I mean I mean not really. I mean it’s not really a big deal to me now as far as that situation. Brown’s tone shifted. He tried to steer the conversation back to his music saying I think I’m past that in my life and I think today is the album day. So that’s what I’m focused on. So everybody go get that album. But as the questions continued, you could see it the tension rising on live TV. Definitely this album is what I want them to talk about and not the stuff that happened two years ago. [Music] He performed his hit Yeah. 3X immediately after, smiling on stage, at least for the cameras. [Music] [Applause] But once the lights went down, things took a turn. Backstage, witnesses reported yelling, then the sound of shattering glass. Brown had stormed into his dressing room and smashed a window overlooking Time Square. Moments later, he walked out of the building furious, shirtless, and silent as cameras captured every step. ABC issued a statement defending Robin Roberts, saying the interview was fair and relevant. The next day, Chris Brown apologized, telling fans he let his emotions get the best of him. So, yes, I got very emotional and I and I apologize for acting like that. Yeah, you think for Good Morning America, it was a headline that still echoes through the studio halls. The morning Chris Brown’s comeback came crashing through the glass. Watch out. I’m doing this for my fans, so I could care less what anybody else think. You’re going to love this one. At number two, Robin Roberts turns up the heat. [Music] It was barely 8:00 a.m. on September 5th, 2024, and Good Morning America was already on fire. Literally. Do it. That morning, Robin Roberts, the calm, collected anchor we’ve known for decades, decided to do something no other GMA host had ever attempted. Hot, baby. Let’s go. Okay. All right. She took on the Hot Ones challenge. Sitting across from host Shawn Evans, Robin faced a lineup of three wings, each one hotter than the last. First up, the classic. Here we go. Here we go. Yeah, no problem. Right. Easy. Second. Los Calientes Barbcoa. This is about the middle of the line. About the middle that we’re going. Oh wow. Big bite. Yeah. Got to be in it to win it. She winced. She laughed. And now we are working our way to the end of the gauntlet. Then came the final boss. The last dab experience made with the world’s hottest pepper, Pepper X. All right, here we go. Here we go. It hit instantly. Her eyes watered. She waved the napkin and joked, “I almost said a bad word.” The studio erupted. Shawn Evans reminded her she just made Hot Ones history the earliest live wing challenge ever attempted before 9 in the morning. I’m coming to see you, mama. Robin held strong through all three wings, quipping through tears. And that morning, America didn’t just get the headlines. We got the heat, the humor, and one of GMA’s spiciest moments ever. Cue the wedding bells. At number one, it’s love in real time, the live GMA wedding. We’re back now with our biggest Valentine’s Day event ever. It was Valentine’s Day, February 14th, 2025, and love was quite literally in the air over Time Square. Hi. Um, I’m Sam from GMA. We’re looking for two people to come into the show and kind of see our studio audience. Can you tell me your name? Amid the morning rush, two musicians, Chase Giles and Daniel Alexandra, were asked to be part of the GMA studio audience. But Daniel had a secret. One that would unfold live on national television and write their love story into GMA history. Justina Giles. Will you marry me? As the camera rolls, Daniel dropped to one knee and asked the question live on national television. Oh my gosh. Yes. But the surprises didn’t stop there. Within minutes, co-anchor Sam Champion announced a twist worthy of a romcom. Now, um, an engagement on GMA would be one thing, but we’re going to get married within 45 minutes, so we’ve got a lot to do. The proposal was only act one. Act two, a wedding live in under an hour. What? We don’t have a whole lot of time. We’ve got a lot to get ready for, by the way. The crew raced to transform the GMA studio into a Valentine’s chapel. Roses, candles, music, and even the couple’s families who’ve been secretly flown in. Wow. Wow. Wow. Host Michael Strahan, Lara Spencer, Rebecca Jarvis, and Gio Bonitez looked on as Chase walk down a studio aisle. Oh, I always get emotional at weddings. You’re a minister, too. By the power vested in me by the state of New York and Good Morning America, I present the new husband and wife, Daniel and Chacita, you may kiss the bride, sir. 45 minutes after the proposal, they said, “I do.” Live on air. The crowd cheered and just when they thought it couldn’t get any better, GMA had yeah, one more surprise. [Music] Singer Montel Jordan appeared to perform this, turning Times Square into a wedding dance floor. Then came the honeymoon reveal. You are going to the Cayman Island. Yes. An all expense paid trip to the Cayman Islands. How do I get on this show? Oh my gosh. Is this real for Good Morning America? It was love in real time. Proof that when it comes to unforgettable mornings, no show does I do quite like GMA. You are crazy. From fbombs to free falls, wardrobe whoopsies. Now the back of my dress just popped to wild weddings. All before 9:00 a.m. Good morning, America. That’s half a century of unforgettable mornings, unpredictable moments, and unbelievable fun. Here’s to Good Morning America. 50 years of OMG and counting.

Wake up and smell the drama! Good Morning America is celebrating 50 years of caffeine-fueled chaos — and the bloopers are just as legendary as the headlines. From diva disasters to Hollywood slip-ups, the morning show that defined “live TV” proves anything can (and does) happen before 9 a.m. Remember the wardrobe that couldn’t keep it together? The A-lister who let an F-bomb fly? Or the proposal that turned into a wedding before your first sip of coffee? Buckle up — this anniversary special spills the tea on half a century of OMG moments you won’t believe actually aired.
