NEW YORK – Robert Pattinson’s latest role couldn’t be further from himself.
In “Die My Love” (in theaters Nov. 7), the “High Life” star plays a young dad named Jackson who has no idea how to support his writer girlfriend, Grace (Jennifer Lawrence), after she gives birth. But in real life, Pattinson, 39, lights up when he speaks about his partner, singer/actress Suki Waterhouse, 33, with whom he welcomed his first child early last year.
Becoming a parent, “it’s funny, you have absolutely no clue how to even prepare,” Pattinson told USA TODAY during a recent sit-down conversation with Lawrence. “I mean, I was literally preparing for a baby as if I was trying to plan a vacation (laughs). I was like, ‘I just want it to be as seamless as possible!’ That’s the only way I could understand it; it’s just impossible. But that was literally my only conception of how to be helpful, like, ‘We’re going to get a really nice parking lot situation at the hospital!’ ”

After Waterhouse gave birth to their daughter in March 2024, Pattinson says he aimed to be supportive by “listening” and “not being judgy.”
“Also just acknowledging that you don’t know what you’re doing, and being incredibly patient,” Pattinson says. “Suki’s incredibly impressive about being able to multitask many, many things at the same time. I mean, she was doing Coachella (music festival) five weeks after she gave birth, so she was immediately training for that.”
Pattinson grins as he recalls a week before the festival, as they encouraged each other to “do a little cardio because we hadn’t been off the couch for like a month (laughs). She was unbelievable. I don’t understand her resilience, it’s insane.”

Like Pattinson, Lawrence was a relatively new parent when she filmed “Die My Love” last year. The Oscar winner shares two young children with her husband, art gallerist Cooke Maroney, and her now-3-year-old son, Cy, would sometimes join her on the set.
The experience of having kids was vital to both Lawrence and Pattinson in how they approached their characters.
“That’s what was so incredible and so personal about the movie,” Lawrence says. “We are both in a similar place in our lives: We’re both partners in relationships and we’re both parents.”
Although she’s been cast in maternal roles before in “Joy” and “Winter’s Bone,” “having an awareness of the child’s perspective is something that I’d never had before,” Lawrence says. “How important it is to be consistent for your child or to be calm for your child – all these things that you just weren’t aware of before somebody’s nervous system is completely reliant on you.”
