‘RuPaul’s Drag Race UK’ Season 7 Episode 6 recap ft. Sally TM interview | Werk Room Weekly

It’s Sally TM and you can get your Drag Race fix on page six. Hi, I’m Jason. I’m Brian. And welcome back to Workroom Weekly. We’re back talking all things RuPaul’s Drag Race Bangers and Mesh UK season 7. Oh my gosh, we’re at episode 6. Uh we’re more than halfway through the series. I’m really loving these girls. I find that especially in this uh week’s challenge, I was like all of them are so talented and they’re very nice to each other. It’s a very chummy group which maybe is like not the best for television. We need we need a I think a villain and we lost Viola who is maybe our villain. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. and like the chaotic in nature of Naong Bella like we you know the the the the dynamic characters I think have left us but there are still very talented girls left and we have to get into this episode because it’s the live. Yes, Rusal live. Are they really singing live? I was like they’re definitely speaking live and they’ve got the you know little Britney microphones but I was like this is too good to be live. I’m I’m I’m skeptical. I’m a little suspicious. But before we even get into that, we got to talk about the top of the episode. So, this was following Chai Grande’s elimination. Very sad. Our Tai Queen. And if you guys didn’t catch, we actually released an interview with Chai separate from last week’s recap. So, if you want to go watch that, it was so cute. We talked all things Slian Royale season 2 and just like other stuff about like the show. So, definitely like go check that out. But, um, CTG was in the house. She was so precious. And maybe that won’t be the last queen we talked to um from this franchise, but it was following her elimination and Selex Alexa ended up going from the bottom in episode 4 to winning episode 5. So um it’s really interesting because the badges are so spread out. We have a one badge for each girl. We have Selexa has a badge, Bonnie has a badge, L has a badge, Sally has a badge, Bones has a badge. So like it’s anyone’s game at this point. It’s practically an equal playing field. It really is. And you know, there are some girls like Paige who like are still feeling a bit down. She doesn’t feel like the judges are seeing her, you know, her true self. Um, but I did love she said if she had to lip sync, in the words of Silky Nutmeg Ganache, she was ready to do so. And she ripped that wig off. If I would have lip sync for my mother life today, I was mother ready. I was ready to do so. Um, I thought it was great. So, oh, that would have been a blonde wig reveal for the ages. Yes. And um the next morning, Trace also says, you know, she is starved for a badge. And she said all she’s been eating so far is Welsh rabbit [Music] or eat a little bit of Catherine feelings. The shows of the season. Yes. They the girls said, “You want to maybe stop focusing on finding love and maybe winning this competition?” So, a little bit of friendly shade from the girls. Um, but yeah, we go into this week’s maxi challenge, which is the ruicle. The girls are starring in a live musical production of Peter Pansy. I mean, genius pun. You know, just when you think the puns, they’ve run out. No, Peter Pansy. It’s so good. So, Selexa won the last week’s challenge, so she got to assign the roles. Pretty much everyone got the roles they wanted to, except for Tris. Um, she ended up having to be a croc destroyer, but she ended up getting to work with, you know, her girlfriend Katherine. So, was she really upset? You know, it could have been worse. I think I was nervous about, you know, obviously Arusal. They’re not all musical theater queens. Page three has, you know, seven years of musical theater professional experience. You know, low-key, we find out some of the queens are fantastic singers. Like, okay. I know. Okay. But like, I love this quote from Sally. I would rather shove rusty nails up my ars and shoot them out like ping pong balls than sing live. Period. And Sally TM is my girl. I was like, “Oh, wait. You’re that scared of karaoke?” Yeah. Yeah. I mean, it’s hard. Like you said, you have someone like Paige who literally was in Kiki Boots on the West End. You have, you know, people like L who are just like, we will get into that later, but of the voice of an angel. And pretty much everyone else is like middle of the road or bad. like it’s not, you know, you’ve got these two powerhouses um and then everyone else just has to like use camp and wit to like, you know, edge up. But did you have like a favorite uh performance within the ruicle? I mean, I loved L and Bones’s duet, you know? So L plays Wendy in the Peter Pansy musical and Bones is Granny the dog, which I think is originally Nanny the dog. I can’t remember, but I thought they both were they were fighting over the love interest and it was just such a classic musical theater, you know, campy love song. I thought that duet like stole the show. Yeah, that I mean I’ll give it to Paige also. That trio, that beginning trio of Paige, Bones, and L I thought was so strong. It was so captivating. Um, and then we got to the other groups and I, you know, I did like uh Bonnie Klein. She was partnered with uh Sally TM. She was good. I mean, she outacted uh Sally, which you know, ended up being to dis her disadvantage ultimately. Did you clock the UK hun call back? Yes. I loved it. I mean, we have It’s like the national anthem of Drag Race UK. Like, of course, we’re going to reference back. Bing bang bong, baby. The UK tunes. Um, but yeah, I think those uh that beginning trio was definitely my favorite. And then we get into this runway, which I think ultimately separated the pack of people. So, the theme was battle axe or warrior queen. Um, I loved a lot of these outfits. I think this was a really strong category as a whole. Oh, yeah. I felt like I was a little kid again watching Zeno Warrior Princess. Do you remember that show? If you’ve never seen Zena, the clips are available online. They are campy. They are lesbian realness. Yeah. To the extreme. This was very sexy to me, very fun. I loved, you know, the sci-fi fantasy elements. I think the queens are really shining. Yeah. No, I got to give some specific shoutouts. I loved Bones’s outfit. This like really like fur. It was so structured with like the hips and the shoulders and like she had this amazing hair. I think a lot of some of the girls were giving Warrior Princess, but it was giving more costume. This was like couture, you know? This was couture. This could be in Dune. This could be in Mad Max, Star Wars. This was Hollywood level, you know, seam street. And I think I loved especially seeing it coming from Bones because you know she was given well she wasn’t given the critique but Paige was given the critique about showing too much body and I think Bones is in that same camp where this week Paige still showed body. Yeah. Last week Bones was just skin and bones. Yeah. She was literal Bones and you know for her to come out in this very theatrical like Broadway level costume was a great switch up and then paired with her incredible like performance in the Ricle. I think this was a really strong performance for Bones overall. Loved I mean, she’s like, “Is there a dog character?” My name is Bones. I will take that one. I will take it. Um, other ones I loved, um, Elvos. We got to talk about this one. This like repurposed material, she said. But like the details in this, like the embellishments, it was an Irish designer, too. You know, Ella is from Belfast, Northern Ireland. And, you know, she said that it was a reference to uh, The Last Queen of Ireland. Yeah. Which is Right. Am I Am I remembering that? I don’t know. I just remember being gagged by this outfit. It was so gorgeous. um definitely was a steam stealer. I mean, my favorite was Sally TM really. I thought it was so just cool, just visually stunning. Like, I don’t know if you know, she was a a female pirate, right? Little But, you know, I just thought the the optical illusion with this the the whites uh you know, sketch come to life, which is really cool. Yeah, I’m obviously I’ve been in the bag for Sally since day one. I know. I know. It was I liked it, but wasn’t my favorite outfit. Not big enough. I don’t know. I mean, it fit Sally’s like aesthetic, but like when you see these outfits that are so intricate like Bones and L even Selexa that like bronze outfit, she was wearing like 14in Gaga heels like an 18 inch waist. It was Yeah. Like when you have those outfits like back to back, it just kind of felt like Sally kind of fell to the back in terms of like this presentation as a whole. But like speaking of Sally, I thought it was really beautiful in the critiques. She gets this moment with Ru where like, you know, Rue, she has her moments where she will give the girls flowers and like reassure them of their brilliance, but we don’t see it as much. And for her to just plainly be like, “Sally, you are so unique. You are so gifted. You’re special. You’re so special.” To see this moment from Rue and to see the way that Sally absolutely appreciated and needed to hear that in this week’s special. We got to take a look at this monologue cuz this actually brought me to tears and it brought Sally to tears. Take a look. Sally, you are something special because of your uniqueness. It’s cuz even in the rical, the truth is you you stood out. Thank you. And sometimes in the wrong way. You are such a character. Thank Thank you so much. It’s the truth. It’s the truth. It’s It’s really good. Like, you know, and like I said, I I want to see more moments like this from Rue and you know, cuz the these girls are, you know, we go through highs and lows and like when the girls hit that low, they need Mamar Rue to like be there to give them the reassurance. RuPaul did say this week, we are being nitpicky. Everyone’s looks fantastic on the runway. Everyone crushed the ruicle. It’s true. Like this is a really strong cast. I do think, you know, the sh the season might be missing a little of the grit, a little of the wild cards because everyone’s so polished and good. Yeah. I mean, it was so good that we ended up having two winners. We had L Vos ended up winning and Paige three, which was great. I’m glad voice is so good. Oh, the minute she started singing, I was like, she won. She won. Like, it’s it’s like an unfair advantage. But Legally Blonde, like she just has this little beautiful little soprano. Yeah. We always talk about like these girls should go to Broadway. L needs to go to Broadway. She needs to go to the West End. Like this voice is incredible. And I’m glad that Paige ended up getting a win finally. She deserves it. She carried the show. She was the anchor. And you know, the guest judge kept saying, you know, I felt safe with this person, which in musical theater, it’s all about the cues. You can’t miss, you can’t drop a line. You can’t be all about you. The whole company succeeds together. And I think Paige really carried the show. Yeah. I’m really happy for her. Uh, but that meant that our bottom this week was Tris and Sally. Um, this is sad because they’re both really strong performers and like R said, they both no one gave an objectively bad performance. This was very minute details of picking, you know, things apart. Um, but the girls ended up getting to do a very, very fun song for their lips saying, “Don’t write on my parade. Are you kidding me?” Is I hear Liam Michelle calling. I hear Liam Michelle calling. I was actually mad they didn’t do the Rachel Barry Glee version. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Come on, funny girl. Let’s see it. Let’s see it. This I mean this is just it’s a classic. It’s a classic. Like to see you know how these girls would interpret this. I mean I could only imagine if like Catatherine or Bonnie Anne were doing this like would have sent it home. But um I was very surprised Taurus she emoted. This song is all about emoting and giving personality and camp and I think Sally was she was there but Teras was edging out at least in my vision. Yeah, Sally was you know I think also just struggled with just basic walking like she is such a looks queen and she’s so creative but like you know when you look back at the lip sync it’s just a lot of walking to stage left stage right upstage downstage. there wasn’t a lot of, you know, finesse to the movement. And at the end of the day, like drag queens, they got a that walk. They got a strut. Yeah. And, you know, that’s something that she’s probably going to have to work on, you know, going forward. Yeah. Um, but it ultimately ended up being that TR won and Sally did not. And that devastated your girl. Unfortunately, I was putting Sally in the top four. I know you said it last week. Crazy. I know. I know. I just think she’s so, you know, they all kept saying, “I can’t stop looking at her. She really does, you know, capture the eye so well and her looks were so bonkers and unique.” And, you know, I the guest judge, I have to like pull this quote. I think she really nailed it. And unfortunately, the results didn’t um match this, but she says, “Being wrong and strong is better than being right and shite.” M and I think like that sort of has the, you know, the Sally uh energy where it’s like we didn’t understand a lot of her looks. Sometimes the visual was like two things smashed together, but like I’ I’d rather see that than someone who is, you know, right and shite. Yeah. And I’ll just say that. I know. I know. uh just so I I said it before, you know, she has such a clear vision and every outfit that walked down that runway, we knew it was something that could only be worn by Sally and you know, it fit into her larger world or universe of her drag and I think that’s so cool to see. There’s absolutely more that we need to see from her. You know, it makes me want a UK allstars that much more because like someone like Sally has absolutely gone too soon and you know, we need to see more. And you know, queens all over the UK are going to be calling her up for looks. Are you kidding? Yeah, absolutely. She’s going to have a very lucrative career as a designer. Yeah. Not only are the queens going to be calling her up, but we’re actually going to be calling her up because we’re going to be able to talk to Sally, you know, right after the elimination. We’re going to talk about this episode. Um, so we will, you know, be attaching that at the end of this, uh, episode. So stay tuned and, um, let’s go talk to Sally. We are joined today by the queen who stitched, sewed, and served her way through RuPaul’s Drag Race UK season 7. It’s Sally TM. Hi, Sally. You look gorgeous. You’re coming to us today in this fabulous clown look. And I know you’ve shared on Instagram that you actually designed and made this yourself. Yes. And you’ve also shared in your Meet the Queens that you think your, you know, your strongest asset is sewing and making your own drag. Where did that passion come from? Well, I I mean, episode two, I was talking about it. My my grandma was able to teach me how to sew. And um I my passion for sewing comes from it’s just therapy. It’s just therapy. It’s like therapy. I think if you find a skill set that you enjoy, you should really stick to it. And you know, mine just happened to be design. Like I really enjoy design. Like I I mean, I used to work as a motion designer. I mean, I still do freelance. Uh but I really enjoy the aspect of designing, creating Wonderland looks, just really having fun with all the crayons in the crayon box. Uh drags limitless. Do you know what I mean? You mentioned episode two, you know, the episode you won the rumble in the jungle elegana challenge. Um can you tell us a little bit about that like winning look and you know how it came together? Obviously I you know what like I we had so much fabric. We had so much unconventional materials. I I was really gravitating towards because Chai and I obviously we had to share the table. Um and Chai really enjoyed this like redu fabric and she had a lot of like pillows as well that sort of matched the vibe. She was like right okay I’m going to go with red. Um, and then she pointed at this horrible green sequin fabric, which actually you saw on page three this week is Peter Panszy. And I literally looked at her and went, “No.” So I saw a lot of like polka dot. I saw the gingham. I saw the because pink, pastel, pink, yellow, and cyan will always go well together. CMYK, it’s the printer, you know what I mean? Printer ink. So I was like, “Right, okay. This will go well together.” And then I can do black and white. That’s always going to be a great color combo. at like and then I was in my head I was like oh this is is this going to be okay like I don’t think the judges are going to really enjoy this sort of like you know clashy of the patterns sort of thing but then it all came together and they really like responded to it which I was gagged by. Yeah. No, I mean it was absolutely stunning. We were loving it. We were obsessed with it. Um I also love fast forwarding to the talent show episode. you revealed on Instagram that, you know, you talked about how you’ve worked as an animator and you’ve actually done like visuals for other drag queens and artists. How do you think your kind of work as an animator influences your drag? I I really enjoyed animation as a kid, like I used to watch a lot of cartoons. I like as a Saturday morning kid, like I would always get up really early to watch cartoons and you know, like whatever we were doing, I I would always make people late because I was obsessed with, you know, Totally Spies. I was obsessed with Pokemon. I was obsessed with anything that was really the the current sort of like Y2K like shows that were on. Um, and for me being able to create a character within Sally TM, she was always like a character before the drag artists. Like I I always drew her and I always drew her in extravagant costumes and like my my my one my favorite character that I’ve ever seen is from Shaolin Showdown. She’s called Kimiko. Um, and Kimiko used to every time they go to a different location, she would be in a different outfit, but it would still be Kimiko. And um, I I always see myself as the Kimiko of drag. Like I always sort of like really enjoy this idea of like being completely different every single time, but it’s still Sally TM. Like you can kind of tell. Yeah, 100%. If you got the chance to like design your own drag show like I think of like Sasha Velour’s like night gowns like what would your like dream like stage production look like? I would like a huge stage and a huge screen behind me. It be so fierce and it’s like I I love the the idea that Sashua is a projection wizard. Like I love the projection mapping of her shows. Like I I went to smoke mirrors. Funny enough, I’ve literally got my smoke mirror t-shirt with me today. Uh just to remind me of my favorite bald evil. Um next to Rupaul actually. No. Um so I I I watched her do the projection mapping of one of her shows and she did this trick where she did like a magician’s trick and stuff like that. And I would like I would love to encourage like other people to kind of do that too. I would have like a full-on like night gown situation. And I really enjoy the idea of championing different types of drag, different varieties of drag, local, regional, and then obviously rude girl drag. And that’s what I would love to do after Drag Race. I would love to have my own show where I just produce and like go on tour with this huge stage like show of ideas and animation and just like the the love for the arts. Like honestly, like I just think that um animation lends itself so perfectly to drag because the visual behind the artist is so important as well as what’s in front. Well, when that show comes to life, we will be first in line. We will be front row there to support. Speaking of our favorite bald divas, uh this episode you and Rue had this very beautiful moment on the stage during critiques where she really praised you and I we talked about in our recap how you know Rue doesn’t often like give flowers but like for her to see like just plain spoken be like you are special, you are unique. Like what did it mean to like hear that coming from her? You know, like I’ve had a very tumultuous drag journey. Um, I I feel like um there was there’s been quite a lot of like twists and turns in my little drag journey and I’m really grateful for the fact that the person who is probably the top professional in our um little industry of drag um gave me my gave me my flowers. It was crazy like the fact that she was able to just honestly like it it was surreal. And obviously this is a show that’s edited. Like you don’t get to see everything. And that went on for a long time. I didn’t think they were going to get on to select at one point because they were just talking about how great I was. And it was like for me to be able to go out with those comments is something that no one else could take away from me. Not one person could be like she was horrible in the challenge. Remember Rupaul said I wasn’t. Remember Rupaul said I was a star. That you were and that you are. Um, you also shared on Instagram today this really beautiful like heartfelt uh Instagram post kind of reflecting on your journey. You know, we know that you’ve auditioned seven times for the show. Like after seven auditions, a challenge win, a season full of creativity. Like what has been your proudest moment from your time on Drag Race? I mean definitely winning a badge like going home back home to South Shield being like I won a challenge on Drag Race. Like not a lot of people could say that. Not a lot of people would say that. I mean, for me, I really wanted to be able to prove myself and be able to showcase to people that I actually do deserve to be there. And, you know, I think I did that fiercely. Yes, you did. You did. You are literally like one of our favorite girls on the show. Like, we literally were like, we were dreading this day. Like, I don’t want this to happen. I literally said I was like, you are the reason I want a UK allstars is cuz like we need to see more Sally. Like, literally get her on a global all-star somewhere. I just I need you back on the screen. Like are you in the capacity of like you would revisit Drag Race ever down the line? I think if I take a few years I I would love to go back. It was like I was so funny. I actually had hypertension before I went to Drag Race and then I got to Drag Race and then I stopped having hypertension. I was like, “Oh, all I need to do is just have a holiday.” And it was like, “Yes, it’s a pressure cook environment, but man, I felt like I was on holiday. I really did.” Then I got back and then I was like, “Oh, I’ve got hypertension again.” gag. Um, I really enjoyed it. I would absolutely love to do a global allstars like I would love to do that like to be the thing is like I I remember obviously global allstars it’s representing a country one person from each country and I would think that yeah I would absolutely represent a different side of you know Kitty Scott clothes was a great example of um what I would consider like London drag really sort of like fierce gorgeous um embodiment of femininity and like you know realism and camp whereas I like the complete opposite. I represent a alternative uh very punk, very like very high fashion, very avanguard drag that, you know, not many people do represent in the UK. And I really would love to do that. Global Allstars, if you’re calling, hey, baby girl, we’ll put in a good word. We will we will we’re campaigning for Sally. We’re campaigning for Sally. I mean, um, you’d mentioned, you know, in some of your posts for this season, like Teresa May, you know, helped you a lot with, uh, kind of your journey and like was there any other like queens or like maybe even like alternative queens that like, you know, you kind of looked to or, you know, got guidance for, you know, going into Drag Race? So, I I did um I had I’ve had a few conversations with a lot of like because I obviously I really I run in circles with like Joe Black. Um, I remember having a very long conversation with Joe Black about it. I remember having a long conversation with Charity Case about it. Um, and also Banksy as well. Um, I like those are the girls that I would like compare myself to if I was um to say um those are the girls who um really incite like sort of like joy and the the way that they represent their drag and their identity and their authenticity is, you know, very clear. Um, and like their journeys were very sort of like they taught me obviously Joe and Charity didn’t really have the best time. Like they were like saying that they were like, “Oh, alternative drag is not really welcome on Drag Race.” And I was like, “Oh, well, I I I want to go on it. I really want to be able to showcase what I’ve got.” And I like I I kind of was like I really hope like I obviously I had that in the back of my head. I was like, “Oh god, like um I hope Rupaul likes me.” like the the only thing like the the sure way I was like I I hope I just make her laugh. Like that’s the one that like I was just wanting so badly. I I went in with little wins and I was like right okay like please I just hope that they like me as an alternative drag artist. And you know I really I’m so glad that I was able to like hit it out the park with um everything that I said, everything that I did. I’m so glad that they really responded and just so glad that a lot of people are responding positively to me. Absolutely. Like you said, whether it was, you know, acting, whether it was design, like your runways, like every time you would walk down the runway, we would be like, “This is only something that could be worn by Sally.” And you can like take the drag queen out of it and you would know that’s Sally. And the fact that like you can have that mark and have it, you know, done so effectively so quickly on a show is just fantastic. So, like we absolutely adore you. What can fans expect next from Sally? More fashion, more more animation. What are we getting? Touring? Oh, I hope I go on tour. That’d be so fun. I really want to travel the world. I like I have a lot of friends in America and I really wanted to go to America. Um I like I would love to go to Italy. I’d love to go to France. I’d love to go to like the all corners of the world. Like I really do. I really enjoy like I just enjoy it. Like I really do. Like drag is so fun and like to be able to like meet all these people who’ve been like, “Oh, we love you. Come to this place.” “Oh, we love you. Come to this place.” It would be fierce to do that. Yes. We need you to come to the US. You need to come to New York. We need to see you in Brooklyn. We need to meet the alternative girls here. They are doing it unlike anyone else. I know the Brooklyn nights would literally gag for a Sally TM show. And we’ll be there. We’ll be there front row. I promise. Um thank you so much, Sally. We adore you. We’re going to keep following along and just thanks for everything.
