Scandal is an unhappy tradition that stretches far back into royal history but poses particular challenges for Europe’s monarchies as they strive to adapt to the modern world.
“This is the biggest crisis in the European monarchies,” Wim Dehandschutter, a royal expert, said of Andrew’s downfall.
Republicans have had a field day, claiming that the 1,200-year-old British monarchy is in crisis.
But many of Europe’s ancient houses have their own Andrews; a rogues’ gallery of royals whose blunders, gaffes and crimes have threatened the very institution of monarchy itself.
“Every royal family has its own bad boys and negative stories,” said Mr Dehandschutter, who reports for Belgium’s Het Laatste Nieuws newspaper and the VTM Nieuws broadcaster.
“Spain has a problem. Norway has a problem. Denmark had one a few years ago and the British Royal family has the biggest problem at this moment.”
