King Charles turned 77 years old on November 14.

After a difficult period regarding his younger brother, the former Prince Andrew, the King was celebrated in South Wales, where he and wife Queen Camilla spent the day.

Charles was given a birthday cake at Cyfarthfa Castle, a historic building in Wales built in 1825.

Charles—who was Prince of Wales from 1969 until 2022—was celebrated by members of the local community, including several people with connections to both the King’s and the Queen’s patronages. Cyfarthfa Castle, where the celebrations took place, is considered one of Wales’ most significant historic buildings, People reported, and was built in 1825. It now serves as a museum and art gallery and is, like Buckingham Palace, in the middle of a long-term renovation effort.

On Friday, a new portrait of the King taken by favorite royal photographer Millie Pilkington on the grounds of the Sandringham estate was released to mark Charles’s birthday. Charles’s son Prince William and daughter-in-law Kate Middleton sent along birthday greetings to the monarch, writing on Instagram, “Happy Birthday to His Majesty The King!”

The royal family’s official Instagram account also acknowledged the big day, writing, “77 today!🎈Thank you for the kind words and well wishes on His Majesty’s Birthday.”

The happy occasion follows the difficult decision for Charles to strip his younger brother, now known as Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, of all of his royal titles and privileges on October 30. The former Duke of York had been “dragging his heels,” according to Queen Elizabeth’s former press secretary Ailsa Anderson, which led Charles to declare “enough is enough,” she told People.

“It must be mixed emotions for him,” Anderson said of Charles, adding, “That is why this has taken such a long time. It is family and monarchy, and when the lines are blurred, it’s very difficult for them. I’m just glad the late Queen is not around to see this.”
