Audra McDonald Details Suicide Attempt & Psychiatric Hospital Stay | E! News

Audrey McDonald is sharing a difficult chapter in her life. The six-time Tony winner reflects on her mental struggles and suicide attempt at age 20 while she was studying at the Giuliard School in New York City. Audra shares in a speech at the Hope for Depression Research Foundation lunchon on November 12th per people. My biggest dream was to be on Broadway to tell stories through song and to live in that place where music and demotion met. I had never been closer to my dream and yet I had never been further away from it. As her mental health continued to worsen, she initially refused to acknowledge what she was going through, saying, “I was too proud to admit that I was falling apart. I fought my whole life to get there, and now that I was there, I was lost. Completely lost.” The 55-year-old shares insight into the weight of navigating her depressive episode and suicide attempt while in school. One night I broke, I slit my wrist,” she says before ultimately calling the student affairs director for help, adding, “She stayed with me. She called for help. She saved my life.” Audrey adds that she was admitted to Gracie Square Hospital, a psychiatric hospital for 1 month following her suicide attempt. The actress recalls, “I was disoriented. I was unsure of who I was anymore. It was the darkest time of my life, but it was also the beginning of my healing.” Although Audra notes that it took time and a lot of therapy, she concludes with, “Grace was waiting for me long before I knew how to claim it for myself.
