Tom Cruise finally took home an Oscar.
On Sunday, November 16, the 63-year-old actor, who has been nominated by the Academy four times and lost, received an Honorary Award at this year’s Governors Awards in Los Angeles.
Taking to the Ray Dolby Ballroom stage at Ovation Hollywood, Cruise gave a moving speech about his love of the cinema and how it “sparked a hunger for adventure” within him at a very early age.
“No matter where we come from, in that theater, we laugh together, we feel together, we hope together, and that is the power of this art form,” he said. “And that is why it matters, that is why it matters to me. So making films is not what I do, it is who I am.”
Not everyone was happy for the Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning star, though.

“Oh, please. Cruise didn’t get one the proper way because he never deserved one to begin with,” sniped one online commenter. “Actor? Yes – deserving? NO! All he’s done is do the same two films over and over and over and…”
Others likened the award to a “participation trophy,” with one commenter joking that they hoped Cruise was given “orange slices” afterwards like players at youth sports games.
However, there were also those who thought the Hollywood heavyweight’s Oscar was long overdue.
“I’m surprised he hasn’t won before,” one fan commented.
“Love him, hate him, indifferent to him, one has to recognize his immense talent and dedication to his craft,” wrote another. “He deserves this award.”
