The countdown to the Met Gala has officially begun. The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Costume Institute has announced the theme for the 2026 event and it is costume art. This is a historic partnership between the two branches of the museum and the exhibit marks the inauguration of the almost 12,000 square ft new wing of the Met Museum, the Kai Mnost Galleries. there. Some of the museum’s most important art pieces across the centuries will be paired alongside historical and modern garments from the Costume Institute. Curator Andrew Bolton said in Vogue’s November 17th announcement, “It’s a huge moment for the Costume Institute. It will be transformative for our department, but I also think it’s going to be transformative to fashion more generally. The fact that an art museum like the Met is actually giving a central location to fashion,” he adds. What connects every curatorial department and what connects every single gallery in the museum is fashion. As for how the theme might influence the gala’s 20126 dress code, according to Andrew, the costume art exhibit will focus on the invisible connection between our bodies and the clothes we wear. The idea was to put the body back into discussions about art and fashion and to embrace the body, not to take it away as a way of elevating fashion to an art form.
