Melissa Rivers opened up about newlywed life with husband Steve Mitchel

Melissa Rivers is opening up about married life.
Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at QVC Holiday House in New York City on Wednesday, Nov. 19, the host and author, 57, opened up about life with her attorney husband Steve Mitchel, whom she married in March.
“It’s a lot like living together, so it’s not a huge transition, but we’re adults,” she says. “I guess there’s more of a feeling of permanence.
She adds, “That’s taken me a minute to get used to because I was always the one looking for the emergency exits and now I feel like I can’t do that.”
Rivers, who shares son Edgar Cooper, 24, with ex-husband John Endicott, went on to speak about being married during the holidays.
“It’s our first holiday married, so I think that means I get a better gift,” she tells PEOPLE lightheartedly. “I don’t know. I think, yeah, I don’t wanna hear, ‘Well, you know, you’re just my fiancé or you’re just my girlfriend, so I had to like do more.’ Like no. Now I’m your wife and happy wife, happy life.”

She continued, “I keep track. If he’s done something stupid or whatever, instead of that, ‘I’m sorry’ or flowers, I kind of keep track and then I get like one big gift.”
“So I’ll be like, ‘OK, this bag,’” Rivers tells PEOPLE. “You know, you filled your bucket of, you know, so now you’re getting me this. I’ll be like, ‘OK, yes.’ And then it’s like it resets and then we just go from there.”
Rivers, who took on the tradition as thanksgiving host from her late mother Joan Rivers, also revealed her husband’s role for the national holiday.
“He’s learned just to help out and don’t have an opinion,” she jokes. “Other than, ‘Oh that looks good.’”
Rivers and Mitchel tied the knot at the Four Seasons in Jackson Hole, Wyoming on March 15.
The ceremony was attended by 150 guests and officiated by Sabrina Lott Miller, the Executive Assistant to the Rivers family for 37 years.
During his speech, Melissa’s son welcomed Mitchel into the family and joked that he should let his mother have her way if he knew what was best for him.
