Netflix to buy Warner Bros Discovery’s studios
So this is not really a surprise. It’s been going on for some time now and it’s uh we are in the full swing uh of a shakeout in the media industries that started at the end of the previous decade. uh where we have a lot of uh uh companies from the telecommunication sector or tech companies coming in and buying uh um media companies that have a lot of assets. Netflix has stayed uh clear of that try to um develop organically as much as possible. But on the other hand, the so-called legacy media uh that are now part of conglomerates like Warner Bros. Discovery and Paramount uh um Sundance, they found sorry Sky Dance, they found it very difficult to compete. So they became um you know ripe um for takeovers and of course Netflix saw an opportunity here uh to move on and uh it’s uh it’s doing it. It looks like uh well we should always look at the impact of any big merger but um um um I think if we look at the history of uh the media agencies in the last three or four decades there’s always been warnings and there’s always been uh uh people pointing the finger about potential dangers in the future. Uh like for example in the late 80s early 90s we had uh uh Japanese studios like Sony and Machusa buying um buying the the American studios and also uh uh later on we have uh Disney buying uh the uh 21st century Fox and there was a lot of discussion about this. Uh I mean there is obviously um we we see the whole um media industries landscape shrinking uh going into the hands of big uh um conglomerates that now are not just in the media business but in the tech business. We had Amazon buying MGM also just a few years ago. Uh so yes there is certainly uh reasons to to be worried but on the other hand the industry uh quite often find ways to uh rebound and uh and uh and uh uh basically weather that storm because I’ve been looking at some of the u comments that uh uh fans have made in the announcement of this deal and a lot of them were very happy because uh they will think that if HBO and Netflix um you know come together there will be you know one rather than two subscriptions there will be you know more shows in one place and they would be very happy with that on the other hand there are a lot of people who actually you know want the diver the diversity HBO um has been spending a lot more emphasis on developing those shows Netflix did it at the beginning but because of the volume of shows it produces uh it doesn’t do that as much and that’s why a lot of the Netflix shows um they just disappear every one or two uh seasons uh but the the the key thing is that for a lot of viewers this is good news uh but for others uh uh it’s not I I think we’re reaching a stage now where the the kind of the what used to be the big six now have become or are becoming big four. Uh but what is interesting I think is we we see now the beginning of of what um is going to be a mergers and acquisitions phase where we will see more of Apple and and Meta and and um and Alphabet and uh and also AI companies. I’ve read recently that AI companies are really interested in uh the companies that control um their television shows and films because they can use uh these programs and these films to train the large language models. That is extreme.
