Why Kim Kardashian Changed Her Name 18 Years Ago | E! News

Well, it turns out Kim Kardashian wasn’t always called Kim Kardashian. The reality star shares that while the world may best know her by that name, she didn’t used to go by Kim Kay. Detailing in an interview with Time magazine published December 4th the exact moment 18 years ago that prompted her name change, telling the outlet, “I used to always go by Kimberly until we signed on to do the reality show. And when I looked at my Chiron Kimberly Kardashian, I said, I think that’s so long for people to say and like, let’s just shorten it to Kim. The Skims founder and her family whose reality show Keeping Up with the Kardashians first premiered on E in 2007 continues, “And it’s so weird because all my friends from high school and growing up, and my dad, everyone calls me Kimberly.” So, while Kim didn’t know back then that she would now be going by a nickname full-time, the 45-year-old did always know that she was going to be on reality TV. Explaining in the same interview, “I really wanted to do a reality show since the day MTV’s The Real World came out, and I watched it with my best friend. I looked at her and I told her, “That’s what I’m going to do. I think we were 11.” I said, “When we’re 18, we have to make a tape and send it to the real world.” We made a whole plan. [Music]

Kim Kardashian shared why she decided to change her name 18 years ago. When the reality star first started filming ‘Keeping Up With the Kardashians’ in 2007, she felt her real name Kimberly was too long, so she decided to shorten it to just Kim.
