Matt Lauer’s career comeback attempt resurfaces every year, but ‘no one will hire him’: sources

Is Matt Lowour making a comeback again? Here with more is our page six editor Ian Moore. I’m having deja vu. So People magazine as you’ve seen reported earlier earlier this week that Matt Lowour is could be making a comeback and there were insiders saying that you know he’s exploring this comeback. Now when I saw the story similarly I remembered it rang a bell and then I looked back and I saw that we paid at page six we’ve essentially been writing this story every year starting in 2018 which was a year uh Matt Lowauour was ousted from you know fire from NBC uh in November of 2017. So essentially this is an annual chestnut that comes back in November of every year that insiders say Matt Lowour is making a comeback. It’s like the Tom Cruz coconut cake. It just arrives for the holidays and we have to make sense of it all. Exactly. But unlike a unlike a coconut cake, which can be delightful, it turns out that, you know, everyone wants the coconut cake. I want one. No one wants Matt Lowauour back. Maybe. Now, sources have speculated, you know, are people in his camp maybe leaking this? Are they sort of exploring what the public appetite might be for him to make a comeback? But our sources have said, look, no one’s going to hire him. he’s basically unhirable. Um, and that uh his skill set as well, you know, is very much was this sort of old-fashioned Today Show thing, which is not as in vogue. Um, would he be able to come back like and do if no one will hire him, could he do like a Megan Kelly thing or a Tucker Carlson thing? Probably not. That’s not his brand. So, I think the Matt Lowauour comeback might just be in these annual stories saying maybe he’s going to make a comeback, right? So maybe that it’s coming from his camp and he’s hoping to have a little comeback. In the meantime, he’s been hiding out in the Hamptons. He’s been hiding out in the Hamptons, but don’t feel too bad for him. I mean, we uh sources had also told us that um Lowour he has more money than he needs. He has more money than he could ever spend. Um he doesn’t need the money. He doesn’t need the money for a comeback. So he’s been Yeah. living his life out in the Hamptons. I mean, he’s popped up once in a while um at uh different different events. He was at a wedding a couple years ago that a lot that like you know Savannah Guthrie was there and Don Lemon were there was there now Don Lemon oddly has predicted that Matt Lowauour could make a comeback. That sort of thing he does Matt Lowour doesn’t have as many friends as he used to right because like Katie Kurrick had even sort of slammed him in her book. Um Don Lemon has said he could make a comeback but yeah I think he’s going to remain in in the Hamptons. Maybe do maybe he’ll come back and do a local Hampton’s TV gig. Yeah. you know, right? Some local maybe he’ll be the local newscaster out in the Hampton. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. So, uh, reporting on the tides. Yeah. Right. Exactly. So, this Yeah. In Montalk. But, so the thing is that the story has been coming up, you know, every year. Expect the rumors to keep going. I had even reported a few years back that he was at if you’ve ever been there, but he was at Donna Hughes on Lexington Avenue, this kind of old-fashioned steakhouse pub, and was overheard telling people, you know, that he was going to come back. So, um he might want to make a comeback, but people are also saying that um you know the the circumstances and the allegations against him which he’s denied. Of course, he was um alleged by a former colleague to have raped her. He was um accused by other female colleagues of um sexual harassment. You know, he never was arrested. No charges are pressed, but he he he’s denied that. He apologized, but people say it was just like it was too much to uh for him to make a comeback, right? and his accuser, you know, reportedly got a $1 million payout from NBC. And of course, the stories that came out around that time, we’ll never forget it. You mean the button under the desk that self-locked the door of his office and all these kind of crazy things were swirling around. I mean, the damage was done. And I don’t know if you watched The Morning Show on Apple TV, but season one dramatized or fictionalized the whole Matt Lowour, you know, sexual misconduct storyline, right? Right. With Steve Carell, right? And well the thing is so right there there are other um there are also I should say other anchors you know like Chris Cuomo had been involved in some scandals lesser scandals um ethics scandals involving his brother involving his brother um and you know he made a comeback and went and went over to News Nation um but yeah our sources are saying that within the industry there’s not really an appetite there’s not really a place for Matt to come back. I’m sure Sirius XM would welcome him with arms. wide open. No comment. All right, great. For more on this story, of course, head to page six.com and also check out Page 6 in the in the actual paper. Yeah, go to your local news stand. It’s hot off the presses. Thanks, Ian.
