Golden Globes 2026 nominations: Biggest surprises, standouts, and top contenders

The 2026 Golden Globe nominations just dropped bright and early. And let’s just say there were battles, values, sinners, and more prestige than a 4-hour director’s cut. Leading the charge this year, Paul Thomas Anderson’s one battle after another with nine nominations, including best picture, director, and screenplay. Nipping right at its heels, Sentimental Value with eight, Sinners with seven, Hamnit with six, and both Frankenstein and Wicked for Good tying with five. Over in TV land, the White Lotus once again refused to check out, checking in with six nominations, the most of any series. Close behind is Adolescence with five and only Murders in the Building and Severance with four a piece. Nominees were revealed by Marlon Weigh-ins and Skyp Marshall, who heroically woke up before sunrise to deliver the news across 28 categories, including a brand new one for podcast. Because yes, your favorite hosts might soon be award winners. Helen Mirren receives this year’s Cesile B. Deill Award because there’s iconic and then there’s Helen Mirren iconic. Sarah Jessica Parker picks up the Carol Bernett Award for her contributions to television, proving she still runs the show. Both will be honored during the Golden Eve special on January 8th on CBS and Paramount Plus. The categories this year are stacked. Starting with best motion picture drama, where the contenders include the modern monster epic Frankenstein, the Shakespearean saga Hamnet, the international hit It Was just an accident, and Neon’s awards magnet Sentimental Value. In musical or comedy, heavy hitters like Bugonia, Marty Supreme, and Netflix’s novel Veague go up against the category leader, one battle after another. Animation fans get a standout lineup too with Zootopia 2, Elio, Little Amaly, and the wildly anticipated Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle. As for box office bragging rights, blockbusters like Avatar Fire and Ash, Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning, and Wicked for Good are all in the running. Acting categories are equally competitive. Leonardo DiCaprio and newcomer Chase Infinity earn musical comedy nods for one battle after another, while Emma Stone is recognized for Beonia. In drama, Oscar Isaac, Michael B. Jordan, and Jesse Buckley are among the front runners. Supporting races include big names like Emily Blunt, Ariana Grande, Benio Del Toro, and Paul Mell. Meanwhile, on TV, nominees across drama and comedy include Carrie Russell, Gary Oldman, Ia Deborri, Selena Gomez, Adam Scott, Jean Smart, and Only Murders in the Building’s dynamic duo, Martin Short, and Steve Martin. In limited series, watch for Claire Danes, Rashidita Jones, Michelle Williams, Steven Graham, Jude Law, and Matthew Reese. For the first time ever, podcast joined the awards circuit with nominees including Armchair Expert, Caller Daddy, Smartless, The Mel Robbins Podcast, and Good Hang with Amy Polar.
