There’s no telling how many people Julia Louis-Dreyfus inspired when she went public with her breast cancer diagnosis in 2017.
However, on a new episode of Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast, the Veep star, 64, revealed that she didn’t actually plan to share the news with the world.
“I was kind of backed into a corner on that one because we had to shut our show down,” she confessed. “Normally I would not have done that. I’m very private.”
But because “250 people weren’t going to be working” while she sought treatment, Louis-Dreyfus explained, “I had to make a public thing about it.”
Fortunately, the actress, who found out that she had stage 2 breast cancer just one day after winning an Emmy for her portrayal of power–hungry politician Selina Meyer, doesn’t seem to have any regrets about sharing her journey with others.

“The good thing about doing that was that I did have this incredible experience of people reaching out to me, asking me about my experience going through breast cancer, for advice and I was able to help,” she told Poehler, 57. “There was something unbelievably comforting about being able to do that on the other side of this trauma.”
After undergoing a double mastectomy and six rounds of chemo, Louis-Dreyfus announced that she had beaten the disease during a 2018 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
Now, “I find myself living more mindfully,” she would go on to tell WSJ. Magazine in 2023. “It’s not like it’s yakking at me all the time, but there’s more laser focus.”
