Kerry Washington Was Once Told She’d Never Work in This Town Again
I always love hearing about someone discovering their ability to advocate for themselves. So, can you each tell me the very first time on a film or TV set when you recognized the power of your own voice? A time when you actually spoke up and something on set or maybe on screen changed for the better. During my years on Scandal that I had a particularly powerful person say to me that I would never work in this town again, not just in the studio. Well, I mean, there may have been a threatening of the town, but I think that in my mind I was like, this studio is not going to hire you. Yes. But I remember thinking like, “Oh, that’s so funny cuz actually like I have a job right now other than this project. Like I’m on a show with a woman who is so filled with grace and dignity and respect. Sha Rimes who like lifts me up every day. And so if you never want to work with me again, that’s fine cuz I have a job and I’m really happy at that job.” So it is again that idea of like having people in your corner and trusting that you can create opportunities for yourself even despite other people’s tantrums.
During a special group edition of Collider Ladies Night with Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery stars Kerry Washington, Mila Kunis and Cailee Spaeny, Washington looked back on a time when a powerful person in the industry told her that she’d never work in this town again.
