On December 14th, two gunmen opened fire at Bondai Beach where Jewish community members were celebrating the first night of Hanukkah, leading officials to label the incident as quote an act of evil anti-semitism terrorism. One of the shooters was killed while another is in custody in critical condition, per NBC News, with authorities investigating whether any more people were involved. The Prince and Princess of Wales released a statement on Sunday in which they sent their condolences to every Australian, sharing, “Our thoughts are with every Australian today following the terrible attack at Bondai Beach. We extend our deepest condolences to the families and friends of those who have lost their lives and stand with the Jewish community in grief. We are also thinking about the bravery of the emergency responders, particularly the two injured officers.” The pair then signed off their initials WNC. King Charles also released a statement on the attack, sharing in part that he and his wife Camila are appalled and saddened by the most dreadful anti-semitic terrorist attack on the Jewish people attending the Hanukkah celebration at Bondai Beach. He went on to say that their hearts go out to everyone who has been affected so dreadfully, including the police officers who were injured while protecting members of their community. The king then commended police, first responders, and public members for their heroic actions, which he said no doubt prevented even greater horror and tragedy. The 77-year-old monarch concluded by highlighting the Australian community strength, noting, “In times of hurt, Australians always rally together in unity and resolve. I know that the spirit of community and love that shines so brightly in Australia and the light at the heart of the Hanukkah festival will always triumph over the darkness of such evil.
