Netflix plans to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery for $82.7 billion as Trump weighs in | Yap Session

[Music] Welcome to Yap Session, the show where we talk about what everyone is buzzing about at the Page Six office is here. And first up, it’s that time of the year. Spotify wrapped. Spotify. This is my Super Bowl. I’m so excited. Spotify wrapped. Apple’s end of year. What do they call it? It’s called an Apple Replay. I’m already feeling left out as an Apple Music user. Me, too. Yes. And I had a replay and I felt seen for like a minute until my entire feed was Spotify. What music age are you? This year definitely threw a wrench into things and people got a little triggered. Oh, wait. You don’t get the age thing over at Apple. Apple Music respects its users. That’s what happened. Yeah, that’s what it is. Okay. How old were you? 75. Uh oh. Oh, don’t do me. I was 38. Thank you. Thank you. 38. Okay. I was a young girl. I listen to the young I’m young. Yeah. I saw a lot of 17 or 81 or 70s. 83. Oh, to be exact. I was 83. What are you listening to? Okay, here is my beef with my fake age. My top five artists, which you would think would contribute to my musical age. Taylor Swift, not 83. No. Sabrina Carpenter, young 25 Gen Z. Luke Combmes was my third, but he’s like he’s young in his 30s. Sure. Okay. Little bit of country. My fourth one was Chapel Rone. Yeah. Yeah. She’s also Jinzy. Very young. Yeah. And Eric Church was my fifth. Okay. He’s a little bit older in the country music scene, but not 83. Yeah. You’re not listening to like What are you not telling us, Ashley? I listen to a lot of Frankie Valley in the fourth. 1950s do music, right? Listen, I listen to Dorothy Dandridge sometimes. So, I mean, if I was on Spotify, you know, I might have been a You might have been this might have been the old couch getting ready in the morning. Yeah. Yeah. My top artist was Role Model who had a a viral song this year and it was Sally When the Wine Runs Out and so I don’t think next year Role Model is going to be on my list, but this year it was like it was on repeat, you know. I was going to say, are you one of those people that hears a song and then you play it over and over again until you’re sick of it because I am. Yeah. Wait, does Apple tell you how many times you played your top songs? Cuz Spotify does if it doesn’t over there. They do tell us. Yes. Oh, they do tell you. No, because my top song was Where is My Husband by Ray. I was manifesting honey all over here. Um, and they told me I think I played it like 84 times and it was literally just this one day where I became obsessed with the song and played it over. Does anyone know this song? Where the hell is my husband by Ray or Where’s My Husband? She’s very throwback and I would say that should have brought your musical age up a little bit. She’s throwback, but her actual age is young. So, sorry. I’m still a young son of thing out here. No, but there was the one day I learned I was like trying to learn the lyrics. So I played it over and over and over again and I learned those lyrics for sure did. You know what Apple Music does? What? They do tell you what songs were like top lyrics read. So if you had Apple Music like maybe you could have maybe worse my husband would have been there but it would have been there for sure cuz I was reading them the whole time. One of my top songs this year was Chapel Res the Subway which I definitely play on loop non-stop. And the song kind of sounds like it’s just keeps going. Yeah. Like at the end it’s like that refrain. She got away. she got away and and so I do think that is part of the algorithm. You know, Abracadabra I saw on a lot of friends because when that album came out um Mayhem, you know, that song had these crazy complicated classic Gaga lyrics and people were like, I need to I need to memorize this today. Yeah, that’s what I do. It’s a challenge. And then my second song was also a ch I like to challenge myself. My second song was Nissan Ultima by Doi. And that’s also another fact cuz the songs I’m learning are like fast. Like it’s like a like Trying to nail those lyrics. I’m trying to nail the lyrics. I’m like again from the top. Do it again. I was outside this summer. I need the lyrics down and l and that was also my fifth song outside by Cardi B. But we not going to get I have two Cardi B songs. I was in I was into that. So we know on past the app sessions that Cardi is your girl. Cardi’s my girl. And I think I saw that Bad Bunny actually got more streams this year than Taylor. He did. Taylor, right? But one thing that the Apple Music users definitely feel left out about is I never got a personal message from the artists that said, “Thank you for listening.” I’m like, “Wow, that would have been nice.” I want Orville Peek, my number three artist of the year. I’d love to be like, “Hey there, Brian. Thanks so much for listening to my weirdo country music.” You know, just slide into role models DMs, right? Say, “Number one, I want to be your Sally. Number two, please send me a personalized message.” Mine was from Taylor Swift, obviously my number one. My my top album, actually is a 2000’s album of Erica Boo, Mama’s Guide. Okay. Now, opposite of you, I mean, I feel like I listen to a lot of like upbeat music, too. So, but she’s like something I want to listen to when I need to like cool down, calm down. We’re in New York City. It’s over stimulating. I need something to like calm my senses. Like, that’s what soothes me. That’s what’s funny about a lot of these though. It’s like some people’s top songs of the year was like rain because that’s what they use to sleep. It’s like rainforest sounds, you know? I feel like they should exclude those cuz they’re not like song songs. They’re for emotional regulation. No one, right? I know mine also I do listen to a lot of audio books on Spotify. So, my Spotify rap included how many listening minutes I had for audio books, which is which might have added to my 83 year old age, but I had a lot of listening minutes to audio books. Wait, but how many listening uh music listening minutes did you have overall? Do you remember? Cuz I think I beat you all. I’m just saying. I was going to say I think mine was pretty low. Only like 2,000 or something. Okay. Oh, really? That’s pretty That’s real low. Cuz I do listen to a lot of audio books. Maybe I’m like over consuming with the music. Mine was like 30k. No, mine’s mine’s low. 26. Oh, shoot. You beat me. I did. That’s I was talking big. You won. Okay. Period. Do you know how many you got or not yet? No. I I I see. This is the problem. Apple doesn’t make it easy to find. You get like an email. You’re like, “Your Apple Replay is here.” And then I like can’t find it in the app. And you It really is a humbling experience this time of year. Meanwhile, Spotify has these cool like genre names. They’re like, “Your top genre is, you know, bubblegum, bubblegum, bedroom pop.” I’m like, “Apple does not suffer that.” They just go, they say, “Hip-hop, honey. You like hip-hop.” Yeah. What though? Apple does need to step it up a little bit cuz I really do like the age thing. I feel like they could do something with like zodiac signs, right? Like you listen to music like an Aries, you know? You know what’s so funny? You like it this year, but they’re saying that the Spotify rap this year is worse than previous years because they’re um and they’re using AI. That’s what the streets tell me. I don’t know. But um they’re using like AI or whatever, so it’s like a little bit less robust than most years. I still had a ball though. I love seeing it cuz it’s like I love analytics. I love to learn about myself. Give me all the data. So fun. Are we all on the same page for like I personally don’t care if people are sharing theirs. I kind of want to see what everybody’s listening to. Everyone’s posting. No one cares about your Spotify, right? I’m like, wait, I kind of do. I like seeing what everyone’s listening to. If if one of my friends has a top album, you know, it’s like Tamman Pala put out a new album this year and I listened to it once and I was like, uh, but then a friend of mine, it was one of his top albums and I thought, okay, I’m going to give it another I’m going to give it another listen. There you go. And you learn a lot about people through their Spotify or their rap thing, like it’s like, oh, I didn’t know you, oh, okay, you get down like that. And for it to be in your top five, you listen to it a lot. So, it says something about you. It exposes you. I know. Literally, that’s how I felt about mine because a lot of my songs were like angsty Taylor Swift songs and I’m like, “Oh, what is this saying about me?” But I just love angsty Taylor Swifty. I love when she has those like killer one lines and I’m just like, “Yeah, Taylor.” Yeah. That’s how I feel about Cardi B. Honey, Cardi B is my Taylor. Yes. I’m like, “Tell them everything, girl. Give it to him.” And wait, you’re a lamb, right? Was Mariah on your top list? Mariah was not. I’m not I wouldn’t consider myself a lamb, but I do like Mariah a lot. It’s kind of unfair though because I feel like December Mariah’s on all of our top fives, right? But then the list comes out first week of December. She was on mine, you know, I I did like her new album, you know, but I always am playing throwback Mariah. So, she’s like she’s on my list every year somewhere. This might be an oddball out, but Summer Walker’s album just released in November and she was on like my top November list. Like she has this song called Go Girl and people are making fun of it because it’s like it reminds you of like a YouTube like they’re calling it Sunday reset music. But I’m like, I’m I’m here for it. Yeah. Sometimes. And you know what it is? Every Spotify, every year that they do this, I have songs that are just won’t leave my playlist. Like certain old songs I just listen to over and over again. It’s like I’m never not going to have certain songs like uh what’s that song called? Pop Style by Drake. Like certain songs by Drake or like whatever that from from my era when I was in my early 20s and in my teen years. Those are always going to be there. So well, it’s interesting. Frank Ocean I saw was one of the top Spotify artists of the year. He hasn’t put out music in years, right? Have to obviously and you know he’s gone viral like individual songs like his song Lost. Of course people throw it on everything any Instagram story where you’re literally lost driving around like I’ll throw on a Frank Ocean. But you know his songs are now kind of new classics and I’m happy for him because I’ve always loved Frank Ocean but now you know he’s just like taking his checks. He’s he’s taking his time with things. I do feel like sometimes, at least for me, my results are skewed when I get them because for instance, Taylor being my top artist, it makes sense. But also, she released a new album, so I was listening to her more because I’m listening to every song on the album. I’m kind of like digging in on it, seeing what I like, finding the little Easter eggs and nuances. So, I’m listening to her more because of that. And sometimes you have to like relisten. Like for me, I may not like an album on first listen. Like I I was not the biggest fan of Renaissance by Beyonce when it first came out, but the more and more I listened to it like I fell in love with the album. So I guess so you kind of have to you have to keep it on repeat and then it’s skewing your results cuz you’re like next year I’m not going to be listening to this album over and over and over again. That’s how I felt about Cardi B’s album. It came out like I think in September October and I listened to it a lot and for her she’s my number one artist. That’s like kind of almost embarrassing how fast she got up there. But also, what was funny was Beyonce was on my list for Cowboy Carter and I’m like, well, her album came out 2024. That’s a little strange. I went to her concert and met. That’s what it is. And I said, you know what? I love this album. Hold on. Let’s put this back on repeat. And Yeah. I went to the concert, too. So, I had to do a little refresh. Yeah. Exactly. I do have Apple, like Apple Music on my phone also, and I listen to only exclusively Hamilton on there. So yeah, I’m really learning about myself in this moment. The Hamilton soundtrack 83. I’ve got Broadway shows and audio books on my listening. You’re obsessed with that. She’s cultured. No, a very cultured girl. These are not bad things. What you don’t want to find out is that your number one song is something really embarrassing like oh my god. Or like if you have kids like your kids are going to it’s like Baby Shark or whatever is like your number one song. Well, maybe not quite. Like I think my boss is like was like K-pop demon hunters and stuff and that was like a lot of her kids and stuff. I saw a lot of K-pop demon hunters. Some people had like Blippy, the Wiggles or whatever and you’re like who has your phone Disney classics? Do you guys ever like do you guys do the Spotify Hulu package deal or whatever? Like do you I’ve been Spotify girly way before Hulu I feel like. So I I No, I don’t have that. But do you neither I use Apple Music? You use Apple Music. But you should come on over to the Come on. The bright side. I mean, for this one month out of the year, I’m definitely jealous of all the Spotify users, you know. A Well, yes. This is a choice you can make. You can maybe next year. And Spotify is owned by a Swedish company, right? Yeah. So, you know, Apple is an all-American company in that way. I’m just a patriotic guy. Listen, my friend works at Spotify and she’s global. I’m like, girl, they’re taking you here, they’re taking you there. I’m like, they’re cooking lunch for you, girl. I mean, they’re making money and not paying their artists very much, right? Yeah. Right. Not too much. Not too much. It’s genius marketing, though, to do this wrapped because everybody’s realizing how often I mean, you guys were saying you’re jealous of the Spotify wrapped at the end of the year. It’s such a simple concept for them to capitalize on people sharing their brand. A little FOMO went a long way. It’s like the blue blue message bubble on your iPhone, you know? Yeah. Oh, yeah. for Android users are important. Is anyone Android here? Android. Android. We’re all Apple down. Okay. Well, we have we have that. We have my message. So, at least we all have that going for us, right? Should we move on to our next topic? Yes. Is it the panone color of the year? Oh my god. Dare we get into the controversial 2026 Panone Color of the Year? The nothingness that it is. It actually has a fancy name. The fancy name is Cloud Dancer. Cloud Dancer. That’s what it is. Cloud Dancer. I really thought hard on that one. How many different versions of white do I need in my life? I’ve got white. I’ve got eggshell white. I’ve got off-white. I’ve got What are the difference between all those? Does cream does cream count as white or no? Cream. Good question. Good question. Puerto Rican white. Next to Cloud Dancer, cream is practically yellow. You know, Cloud Dancer, you know, a lot of people are This has gotten a lot of backlash. The New York Post said it’s like the most boring color they could have picked. A lot of people are saying it’s like seemed like they didn’t know what else to do and they’re like, “Uh, let’s be interesting and pick white.” But there’s actually like some thought behind it. Maybe it’s they’re backing into the the idea, but they’re saying that at in a moment where there’s so much over stimulation that like choosing a shade of white is like a a moment of serenity, a moment of peace, a moment of simple. Let me give you Let me give you exactly what they said. Yeah. Yes. It is a lofty white that serves as a symbol of calming influence in a society. Yes. In a society rediscovering the value of quiet reflection. Wow. They said, “Hush. Y’all are talking too much. Let’s calm this thing down.” And it’s supposed to be a kind of look into the future. What they expect for 2026. So, I receive it. I receive calming energy. I receive, you know, that’s I’m not mad at that. You’re right. So, we’re supposed to in 2026 be leaning into this color. Are we wearing it? Are we painting our walls it? Like what is the point of the panone? I’m definitely seeing more white couches out there. We’re sitting on white right now. I know. Which is really scary. Honestly, I have a dog, so that’s not gonna work out. Yeah. Well, I think it’s going to be like on all of its branding for Panone for for like the branding for the upcoming year, but and it can be like a trendy color. I like to wear white. I’m wearing white today just by accident. I guess I wonder like how much influence that it actually has or or is it is it one of those old timey things that had influence in the past and it’s not anymore though. Not as big of an influence now. Well, I have a some of the past years and I’m going to go a little bit backwards. So, last year was mocha mousse, which is kind of like a coffee color. Then the year before we had peach fuzz, which is, you know, a light light orange. Viva magenta was the year before. And very perry was the year before that. Very Perry was like a dark periwinkle. Okay. periwinkle again remind like a blue purple but I feel like all of those colors that you named are like rich colors and viva magenta that just sounds fun I’m like I’ll add that to my wardrobe but panone white dreamy what is it it’s cloudy white cloud dancer cloud dancer sounds like an like a video game I would I’d want to play you know like you know you could kind of see it but then when you see the color you go, “Oh, yeah.” Like you kind of want Cloud Dancer to have a little bit something extra there. Yeah. You know, Pantone is is a little bit of a stir. In the past, in the recent past, they’ve done two colors for their color of the year. And they did it twice. So, I have some I’ve got some research here. In 2021, they did two colors, illuminating, which was a yellow, and ultimate gray combined. And it’s true. I guess around that time, you did see a lot of like yellow and gray together, right? And then a couple years before that, the color of the year 2016 was rose quartz and serenity. Serenity, which is sort of like a a pink and a blue together. And you know, I I think that’s kind of a clever way to do it. Say, okay, it’s not just this one color. It’s the pairing of these two colors. Yeah. But, you know, I they want everyone to talk, you know, and it’s a talker. They’ve been doing it since 1999, and we’re still doing it. So, well, we’ll have to see if we’re all wearing it in January. We’ll see. I do love white. Do you guys believe that you shouldn’t wear white white jeans or white shoes after Labor Day? Oh, I don’t follow any of those rules. I wear what I want when I want. I feel like for me, I try and pick not me like bashing shades of white in the panone color and then being like I have shades of white that I wear in the winter that I feel are winter appropriate and then shades of white that are more summery. Like if I have a pair of jean shorts or jeans that are long and they’re white, those are more summery for me. vibes. Yeah. But if I’m putting on like a winter white, like a white jacket or cable knit sweater. Cable knit sweater is that like that egg cream color. Yeah. But could you imagine everyone just walking in with white? You’re like, “This is theing cold.” Or worse. Is this a diddy party? Honey, too. Too soon. Speaking of winter though, you guys, winter is coming. Oh, that’s right. Yes. Do you guys watch Game of Thrones? I know some of the girls do, some of them don’t. Me? Yes. I love that. I loved Game of Thrones. And my husband and I also now watch House of Dragons, which has two seasons. And now there’s a new prequel series. There is a new prequel series, A Night of the Seven Kingdoms. And we did actually have the two leads in for our sister um brand Decider. They came in and chatted with us about the new show, the new series, what it’s going to be like, what it’s going to be about. I think that the Game of Thrones universe is just encapsulates so much and just has people grappled with everything that anything they launch, anything they touch basically is going to get millions of views. This one’s a little weird, but I’m sure it’ll have rave reviews. There was more humor in the trailer than I thought when I’ve popped into Game of Thrones, you know, in the past. Yeah, there were like, you know, full-on jokes. Yeah, I tried watching Game of Thrones once on a plane. Um, and I just felt like it was a little it was one of those shows that I feel like I really need to sit down and get cozy, turn the captions on, and just take my time with the consuming. It’s It is a phone show. You can’t be doing anything else. That’s why and it’s one of those things where you have to really like put your phone aside, set aside time. Game of Thrones itself has eight seasons. So, it’s like you really have to be able to dive in, sink your teeth in. You can’t be distracted. And each episode is like three hours, right? It’s like so long, right? Are they long episodes? They’re each an hour, but then as the last season came around, they were getting to be like an hour and a half. I’m like, I cannot sit down to watch a 2-hour movie, but I can sit down to watch the finale of Game of Thrones. Well, clearly people are addicted to Game of Thrones and it’s part of the reason why HBO is such a valuable commodity and we got to talk about big news this week was the Warner Brothers Netflix merger. Netflix is basically has a was it a 27 billion? It was like a 70s something billion dollar acquisition of of of Warner Brother Discovery and it’s not it’s not in stone yet. It’s it’s still working out the details, but by the end of 2026, we think it’ll be it’ll be finalized. But that’s like that’s a big that’s big news because now there’s going to be like just a handful of big players out there for streaming. Um, honestly, brace yourself for a higher subscription price. Oh my god, it was going to be $500. Literally, all the streamers are just becoming cable again. I mean, but that was a good thing for I mean a good business decision for Netflix in my personal opinion because HBO has really great content. So that’s the crown jewel, you know, and all the Game of Thrones shows are on HBO Max. It’s just interesting that Netflix, who is the streaming platform and has their own streaming platform, is buying HBO, who has their own streaming platform. Are we going to combine like Disney and Hulu ended up doing? Because the deal hasn’t gone through, they’re claiming they’re going to keep the streaming services separate. They’re going to have a a bundle deal like Hulu and Disney Plus does, but they they want to be able to keep the prices low. they’re claiming because they don’t want Paramount to swoop in and and and take over the deal. So, I think we’re going to see like a lot of, you know, politeness and customer service the beginning and then we’ll see the prices go. I mean, Disney Plus, if you do the bundle, is up to $25 now. And you’re paying $25 a month for Disney Plus, Hulu, and ESPN. But Hulu, my Hulu still has ads. I’m like, why am I paying $25? No. If I’m paying money, I don’t want to see nar an ad, not one ad cuz why am I what am I? You said you’re getting the bundle deal. You need to up your price to get the ad free version. Warner Brothers has some big properties though. They’ve got Harry Potter. They have friends which people will sign up for a subscription service just to watch reruns. Big Bang Theory Sopranos, the DC Universe, all of the DC. Yeah. Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, you know, they got it all. It’s big. It’s big. They really do. And Netflix has a huge catalog, but they also have a huge audience. They’re glo they’re more global I feel like so then they’re offering that global audience and in the HB the Warner Brother discovery package is offering a lot of really brands that people love and resonate with. I feel like Netflix has done a really good job of like kind of like staining your mind with them cuz anytime I go to turn on like a like the TV I’m like let me go to Netflix first. Yeah, me too. I feel like I’ve been brainwashed honestly. Like why do I go I just go there just like out of habit. But now I don’t know if they have a bunch like if they did combine it how would that look? Like would that do you guys prefer combiner now? No. Keep it separate. Right. I think HBO shows are better than Netflix shows, but Netflix shows are a little bit more the I don’t want to call it the fast food. Maybe the fast cure. They’re fast food. They’re absolutely You know what people have been talking about lately is the the Netflix lighting. How they all are all lit identical. Like there’s no shadows. It’s just something very identical about it. And it t kind of takes the like Jennaqua out of it. Like there’s no they took the art out of What I do what I do wish for Netflix is that if they would go back to kind of like how they were when they first started and they gave us these what was great is like they would give us really good content with like these unknown actors and actresses and um like Orange is the New Black or something and like we were so invested in that sort of content and it felt so good and I feel like maybe this is just me but I feel like when they flood it with you know the biggest stars in Hollywood sometimes it’s kind of like we’re drowning out the quality of it. Absolutely. Yeah. I mean, half the shows have Nicole Kidman in it, which is not a criticism, but it does feel like they’re just throwing a lot of A-listers at some of these projects. Stranger Things is obviously one of their big shows. And all the Ryan Murphy shows, you know, the I’m going to call them the Ryan Murphy murder shows. Yeah. All of those are really popular on Netflix. But I I think while they seem like, you know, omniresent, I think they’re they know they need to diversify their content. and this this HBO grab. I’m calling it HBO grab because actually Warner Brothers Discovery is not selling off the CNN’s and the TNTs and all of there’s like all these other reality based um channels that they’re going to like put in its own little package and then and then sell off the Warner Brothers um all these movies. I mean, The Wizard of Oz is a Warner Brothers movie. This goes back, this is goes back a long time. Way before Netflix was sending us DVDs in the mail, right? Way way before we had to rent them. They would get them in a week and then we would have it for a week and then we would mail it back. Then we could finally get another one. And now they’re controlling the entire movie industry. It’s really wild. Well, we’ll see late 2026. We’ll see if this actually goes through. So, Pantone right here in our panone dreamy creamy white.
