Rob Reiner, wife deaths and what we know so far
USA TODAY’s Will Carless describes the scene outside of Rob Reiner’s house as news of the beloved director’s death broke the night before.
Soon after Rob Reiner and wife Michele Reiner were discovered dead in their home, longtime friend Billy Crystal was on the scene of the killing.
In Dec. 14 footage shared by Fox News, the 77-year-old actor can be seen walking with a woman who appears to be his wife, Janice Crystal, near the Brentwood residence, a neighborhood in Los Angeles. The short video clip appears to show the Crystals wiping away tears as they walk outside of the Reiners’ home with police vehicles in the background.
The two have been frequent collaborators since Crystal appeared on “All in the Family” in 1976 as Mike’s (played by Reiner) friend Al. They went on to work together on “When Harry Met Sally …” “The Princess Bride” and “This Is Spinal Tap.”

What we know so far about Michele and Rob Reiner’s deaths
On Dec. 15, the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed Nick Reiner, the Reiners’ 32-year-old son, had been arrested the prior day on suspicion of murdering his parents.
He is in police custody with no bail. The Reiners’ deaths remain under investigation; in a Dec. 14 press conference, the agency said “many family members” will be interviewed throughout the process. Police have not released details about the alleged homicide, including the couple’s injuries.
Rob Reiner was 78 years old, while Michele was 68.
The couple, who married in 1989, met while Rob Reiner was filming “When Harry Met Sally.” The couple – both executives at the production company Castle Rock Entertainment – went on to work together on multiple Hollywood projects, such as the 2025 comedy “Spinal Tap II: The End Continues” and the documentary “God & Country.”
A number of prominent figures from the entertainment industry and beyond have spoken out about the Reiners’ deaths, with “This is Spinal Tap” star Harry Shearer calling their deaths “unspeakable,” while “The Princess Bride” lead Carey Elwes said he had “no words.”
Kevin Bacon got choked up as he reminisced about his friendship with his “A Few Good Men” director in an Instagram video. “When he called me, I was just so thrilled,” the actor recalled, adding, “He was so fun, and it really comes down from the top.”
