The Oscars are getting ready for a major [music] move, and we’ve got all the details. In a December 17th press release, the Academy announces that the Oscars will officially [music] begin streaming on YouTube starting in 2029, marking a huge shift for the prestigious award show. The Academy writes in their statement, “The Oscars, including red carpet coverage, behindthe-scenes content, Governor’s Ball access, and more, will be available live and for free to over two billion viewers around the world on YouTube. For decades, the ceremony has aired exclusively on ABC, a partnership that dates all the way back to 1976. ABC will continue to broadcast the Oscars through 2028, which also happens to be the 100th Academy Awards. After that milestone year, the new deal kicks in with YouTube streaming the Oscars from 2029 through 2033. Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette How Taylor called the partnership a gamecher, writing in the press release, “The Academy is an international organization and this partnership will allow us to expand access to the work of the academy to the largest worldwide audience possible, which will be beneficial for our academy members and the film community.” And YouTube CEO Neil Mohan adds that the collab will quote inspire a new generation of creativity and film lovers while staying true to the Oscars’ storied legacy.
