Wherever they go, the British royal family seem to be showered with an assortment of gifts, whether it be flowers, chocolate, or even stuffed toys.
But it turns out, they’re not really allowed to keep them.
Royal protocol states the members of the family “are not permitted to keep particular gifts, no matter how graciously they initially accept them,” according to Hello Magazine. The gifts will be collected and added to the Royal Collection.

But there is a loophole when it comes to the younger members of the family. Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis – who, in any case, receive a majority of the gifts – are able to accept many of them, as long as they meet a strict set of conditions.
The “royal gift policy”, a seven-page document featured on the royal family’s official website, says that the 12, 10, and seven-year-old are able to accept flowers, food, and other consumable items of reasonable quantity, and from people not personally known to the royal family.
Books of a non-controversial nature are accepted, as long as they are presented by the author, and the children are also able to accept items of “small monetary value,” costing less than $200.
When the royal family feels another organisation can benefit, they will return the gift to whoever they received it from.

Prince William has been known to find his own loophole, even pinching gifts meant for his children before he can bring it back home to them.
When the 43-year-old paid a visit to North Wales in November to visit an organisation called Youth Shedz. As he stopped by a table of treats, the people behind it began to fill a bag for him, to which he exclaimed, “Oh, sweets. Oh my goodness me.”
A woman behind the table said the sweets were ”for your lovely children,” to which the royal retorted, “They may never make it back to the children!”

The royal family will soon be going on their annual Christmas walkabout, where the kids will no doubt be showered with gifts yet again.
