Amid the magic and rides of Disney World, John Lennon quietly closed the book on The Beatles.
In 1974, while on vacation with his sonJulian Lennon and girlfriendMay Pang, Lennon signed the contract that officially dissolved the band reported Ultimate Classic Rock. The official papers were to be signed by Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison at New York’s Plaza Hotel. Ringo Starrsigned them previously in England.
In 1964, the hotel was the center of Beatlemania in the United States, where thousands gathered outside to catch a glimpse of the Fab Four. A decade later, it became the location where the band was to end, but there was a glitch.
According to The Beatles Bible, legal paperwork was necessary to dissolve The Beatles partnership. However, Lennon didn’t show up at the scheduled meeting.

“The stars aren’t right,” Lennon told Pang, who later passed the remark along to Harrison’s lawyer. Lennon reportedly objected to a clause he feared could create future tax issues, since he was the only Beatle living in the United States.
Later, an attorney from Apple Music brought the contract to Walt Disney World, where Lennon was staying with Pang and Julian at the Polynesian Resort. It was there that Lennon finally signed, putting a period on The Beatles’ business partnership.
Pang captured the moment Lennon signed via a photograph that would be later published in her photography book Instamatic Karma. The New York Times reported that Pang snapped the photo on December 29, 1974.
The newspaper published an excerpt from Pang’s book. She wrote, “When John hung up the phone, he looked wistfully out the window. I could almost see him replaying the entire Beatles experience.”
“The friendship was still there. They were brothers. There was no animosity. And even though they all felt they had to break up to get to the next level of their musical careers, John had started this band that changed the world,” Pang continued.
“It changed pop culture. It changed how we live and how we dress. And he knew that. So when he sat down to sign, he knew that this was it. His was the last signature. As he had started the group, he was the one to end it.”
John Lennon would end his relationship with May Pang in early 1975, reconciling with his then-estranged wife, Yoko Ono. He and Ono would welcome one son, Sean Ono Lennon, before his death in December 1980 at 40.
