“He Had An Indefatigable Knowledge of Movies”: William H. Macy Fondly Remembers Rob Reiner
William H. Macy is remembering Rob Reiner. While speaking with Access Hollywood’s Scott Evans at the 2026 Critics Choice Awards on Jan. 4, the actor shared memories of his late friend and legendary director. “I’m pretty sure just like everybody else, it seems to come in waves, doesn’t it? These tragedies. My heart breaks for the kids. My memory of Rob, though, we did a film called “Ghost of Mississippi.” We did some other stuff too. But in the van, he had this game where you would say an actor and the next person would say a film that actor had been in, and the next person was, say, a director of that, and he was a master of that,” he said in part, adding, “He had an indefatigable knowledge of movies and everything about him. He was so quick-witted and he had a great sense of humor. And the one thing I remember about him directing was his joy. He just loved the whole process. He was like a kid in a candy store all the time. Never saw him get upset.” Macy went on to praise Reiner’s career and legacy, saying,“He was again, magnificent – so smart, too. Think about his career. He did everything and succeeded wildly. We just watched “When Harry Met Sally” for New Year’s Day. Fabulous movie. Still. Cried at the end – every time.”
