Zoe Saldana will return to the role of Cataleya Restrepo, the deadly hitwoman who was convinced that once her revenge was over, that would be the last time we’d see her on screen, but now because of ghosts from her past, she will have to go on one final bloody mission. After years of taking down the cartel that killed her family, Cataleya has been trying to live off the grid, attempting to find peace, when along comes Jason Statham as Marcus Cross, an Interpol agent who has become a vigilante hunter, chasing her killings all around the world, and sees her as his ultimate trophy. Mads Mikkelsen will add a chilling level of menace as Dante Marquez, the lone cartel lieutenant who managed to escape Cataleya’s first rampage, and has spent years creating an empire that is designed specifically to lure her out for personal payback. This sequel is interesting in that it forces Cataleya to decide whether she is completely defined by her violence or if redemption can be achieved by someone with her kill count.

The film will explode with Saldana’s signature physicality as Cataleya battles through three sides of conflict – her own desire to survive, Cross who is stalking her like prey, and Dante’s intricate and deadly traps that are designed to take advantage of Cataleya’s predictably violent needs for revenge. There will be gruesome close quarters combat in exotic locations such as Tokyo’s neon-lit alleyways and Colombian mountain fortresses, where every fight will be staged to show how Cataleya’s skills have developed into something frighteningly effective. Mikkelsen’s Dante operates at a sadistic pace, knowing that the most effective way to destroy an assassin is to make them care about something other than killing, and therefore targets the small number of human connections Cataleya has attempted to rebuild. What sets this above average action sequel is that it explores the cost of being a tool of death – can someone who has been shaped by trauma and violence ever truly break free from the label that defines them, or does finding peace simply delay the inevitable return to the darkness that feels more authentic than pretending to be something they are not? Fans should expect plenty of amazing practical stunts, psychological warfare between two evenly matched predators, and a conclusion that asks if final hunts ever really come to an end, or if there are some people that are fated to continue fighting until there is nothing worth defending.
