Lucasfilm‘s Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord is a new animated show that centers around Darth Maul, the antagonist of 1999’s Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace. The show is set after the events of The Clone Wars and will see Sam Witwer once again return to voice the character.

What happens in the Shadow Lord teaser trailer?

The Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord teaser trailer only offers a brief glimpse of the show, as it mostly only shows some silhouettes and a look at Darth Maul’s face. It has been announced, however, that the full-length trailer will be releasing tomorrow, Thursday, January 22, 2026.

Lucasfilm’s Athena Portillo, who is the vice president of animation for the company, previously said of the show, via Variety, “Unfortunately I can’t tell you too much, but what I can say is Sam Witwer’s involvement in the show has been pristine. I’m very excited about him being able to review the scripts and provide input in all of that as well. Dave Filoni and Sam created the character for animation, and so it’s very important to hear his thoughts as well for the character depth.”

Witwer also said that the show picks up when Maul is “dusting himself off a bit” after Ahsoka “kicked him to the curb.”

He continued, “We learn some different things about this character. He’s got some different traits that you wouldn’t necessarily think he has that make perfect sense from what he’s been through.”

While an exact release date has not yet been announced, it is known that Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord will premiere on Disney+ in 2026. Star Wars: The Clone Wars, meanwhile, is available to stream on Disney+.
