Three years after the release of his explosive memoir, Prince Harry remains locked in a bitter stalemate with his family, but now, insiders say, patience with the Duke of Sussex is wearing dangerously thin.

According to sources close to the royals, Princess Kate has taken a dramatic step back from her years-long efforts to broker peace between Harry and Prince William, signalling that the onus for reconciliation now rests entirely with the younger prince.

The revelation comes just days after Harry reportedly won the automatic police protection he has long sought for UK visits with his family, a development that royal observers believed might finally open the door to healing. Yet those close to the situation suggest something quite different is happening behind palace doors: Kate’s goodwill, after years of careful nurturing, has been exhausted.

How Prince Harry Lost An Unlikely Ally

Kate’s role as the family’s informal peacemaker has been well documented, with sources previously describing her as desperate to heal the rift between the brothers. However, a recent profile by The Times’s senior royal writer, Kate Mansey, suggested a shift in perspective. ‘If Kate has learnt anything from her cancer ordeal…she’ll know that life’s far too short to get hung up on Harry,’ Mansey wrote.

An insider reveals that Kate has now drawn a line. ‘Kate’s patience is wearing thin, she’s spent years trying to keep a door open with Harry, defending him when she could and staying in discreet contact because she genuinely hoped it would help heal things between the brothers,’ the source says. ‘She’s finding it harder and harder to justify her loyalty to Harry when he keeps digging his heels in and refusing to do the one thing that could change everything.’

The source continues: ‘There comes a point where you expect something back in return, and she’s not seeing that from Harry.’ For Kate, that missing something has crystallised into one stark expectation—that Harry should apologise to William for his role in the breakdown of their relationship. ‘The apology to William is the sticking point; from her perspective, that’s the bare minimum he should be doing, and the fact that it still hasn’t happened is impossible to excuse.’

Why Prince Harry And Kate Have Reached An Impasse

During the final episode of their Netflix docuseries Harry & Meghan, Harry appeared to suggest he had been anticipating an apology from the Royal Family over claims of racism and bullying. ‘You know, I’ve had to make peace with the fact that we’re probably never going to get genuine accountability or a genuine apology,’ he told cameras at the time.

Meanwhile, royal insiders have maintained that William, too, was expecting his own apology from Harry—a mirror-image expectation that has left both brothers deadlocked. The source suggests that Harry’s refusal to acknowledge his own role in the fractured relationship has now pushed Kate to her limit. ‘Harry still hasn’t picked up the phone and properly apologised to William, and that’s become impossible for her to overlook,’ the insider states flatly.

According to the source, what particularly frustrates Kate is the perception that Harry has defaulted to Meghan’s wishes rather than exercising independence. ‘From Kate’s point of view, it feels like he keeps defaulting to Meghan’s wishes instead of showing any independence or backbone, and that’s not the man she thought he’d become,’ the source explains.

There’s still hope. Kate and William plan to visit America on July 4th to commemorate the 250th anniversary of American Independence. Kate hoped this trip would help them reconcile. Harry’s police protection has also given the family some optimism, but Kate has made it clear that the decision is now in his hands.
