The 2026 BAFTA Film Awards nominations are upon us, with the likes “One Battle After Another,” “Sinners,” “Hamnet” and “Marty Supreme” vying for overall dominance in a year that feels more wide open than it’s been for some time.
Being revealed from the British Academy’s London HQ by David Jonsson and Aimee Lou Wood, this year’s nominations have the unusual scheduling switch of being announced after those of the Oscars. But the awards ceremony itself still comes first, taking place on Feb. 22 at London’s Royal Festival Hall.
Following the first round of voting, “One Battle After Another” appears the film to beat, having landed 16 longlist slots — a record since the round was introduced in 2021. But hot on its tail are “Sinners” and “Hamnet,” with 14 each, and “Marty Supreme” with 13. “Sinners,” of course, smashed Oscar records with 16 nominations.
While “Hamnet” may be flying the flag for British films, smaller local titles hoping to continue their longlist success into the nominations include “I Swear,” “Pillion” and “The Ballad of Wallis Island.” Both “I Swear” and “The Ballad of Wallis Island” made it into the best film longlist category.
Speaking to Variety recently, BAFTA CEO Jane Millichip commented on AMPAS announcing the Oscar nominations being announced before the British Academy, noting that it was “nice to have Oscar being a bellwether for BAFTA” for a change. But she asserted that, with the BAFTA ceremony taking place on Feb. 22 when the Oscar voting window is still open, the overall winners was still “particularly relevant” to Hollywood.
